This was a better move for him financially in the long run. He gets this money, takes this L then he still has Canelo later on maybe in November or December and tops his career off with yet another PPV in a Mexico vs Puerto Rico showdown. Smart actually. Whether he wins either fight doesn't matter, because Canelo being second means it works; but, if he were to get spanked by Canelo first then it would be over for him, he wouldn't get another shot vs anyone big. But this way he gets two nice paydays then he's done.
Win or lose, the Canelo fight will be there for Cotto. He and his team knew that when they signed to fight Sergio.
Even if he reinjures the knee, how in the hell will Cotto neutralize Sergio's length? We're talking about a 9 inch reach advantage here. Not only that, but Martinez' hands are considerably faster as well. Answer the question above and I might give Cotto a chance.
I'm expecting the fight to take place mostly along the ropes, where Cotto will work his way inside and hurt Sergio. Body work will be key. I don't know if he'll finish him the first time he hurts him, but eventually I expect Cotto to stop Sergio.
As has been pointed out this all depends on Maravillas health - a pre JCC jr Sergio should destroy Cotto - even the Martinez who barely scraped by Murray oughtta win, but Cotto's no pushover and Maravilla has age, injuries and a long layoff against him. Nonetheless - I'm counting on a fairly in shape Sergio turning up and winning by TKO.
Bad knee or not conventional wisdom tells you Serigo wins this though I voted for a Cotto stoppage. I beleive my turning point happened when I realized Sergio has never fought someone who knows how to cut off the ring vs movers and there's no one on Serge's resume that has the overall skill set Cotto has....shotgun jab, body attack, ring gerneralship i.e. cutting off the ring....plus oddly enough Cotto's lack of height might be an intresting dynamic to deal with during the inside exchanges he'll have the advantage via torque, position, no need to over extend. Very intresting indeed.
The same Sergio that took shots from 180lb Chavez and heavy handed Pavlik is going to get KOed by a very small LMW?
This is how I have viewed this fight as well. Conventional wisdom leads me to believe that Martinez should win this fight. However, we also got to take in consideration the circumstances involved. Cotto is an excellent fighter and now has a reputable trainer in his corner that has instilled not only confidence back in Cotto, but also the respect of being his coach. This fight has some shades of Pacquiao vs De la Hoya, where everybody assumed Oscar would destroy the much smaller Pacman. Roach knew better and I have this feeling he has the same sense with choosing Martinez for Cotto to fight. I feel Cotto will stop Martinez with body shots in 8.
Junior really didn't start to commit to the body until the later half of the fight, and even then he was still plodding around chasing Martinez. The body shots eventually slowed him down though and Junior was able to catch Martinez in the final round. With a natural body snatcher like Cotto, he will get it going from the start and actually be able to cut off the ring on Sergio where Junior was just chasing.
Some differences between this fight and the DLH/Pac fight. 1) Pac weighed more than DLH on fight night, that won't be the case here. 2) DLH was drained, Sergio won't be. 3) Pac was in his prime, Cotto is not 4) Pac had far superior hand and foot speed, I'm not sure you can say that about Cotto. Having said that, I get what you're saying. I think the X factor is obviously Sergio's knees. If it seriously limits his mobility, you might have a dead man in the ring with no legs, sort of like how DLH was dead because of his weight issues. So Sergio might be hampered by his knee the way DLH was hampered by his weight draining issues.
Think about it there are so many different factors that play a role in a good damaging attack, accuracy, timing, placement, distance, accumulation etc...Cotto's took flush right hands right on the chin vs Bailey and in around the same time frame was rocked by a short less emphatic hook by Chop chop. When Chavez and Pavlik touched Sergio along the ropes Serge was prepared to absorb those shots, knew they where coming vs Cotto the shots will be short compact and most likely happen during exchanges where Cotto's shots will be more precise, compact and yes land at a faster rate if compared to Pavlik and Chavez if they where in the same position. Again I agree with all those who see the physical mismatch here every physical advantage seen by the naked eye is held by Mr ***y....I just see the fight going a different way.
Body attack is key here, I have a feeling Cotto won't be using the right hand to much in this fight other than using it as a feint and then hooking to the body when Martinez moves right to avoid the feinted right hand.
Everyone mentions the knee though I seriously doubt the strategy that's being built or already has been built is bankin on the fact that Serge's knee is going to give. If anything I beleive Roach is preparing Cotto to fight the best Martinez their can potentially be in the ring that night. Cotto's bread and butter will be his ability to get inside at angles if that means he needs to allow Martinez to initiate the attack then I'm sure they have planned a way to counter.
