Froch v Groves 2 Final Thoughts

I was one of them that wrote froch off. I thought groves had him beat all ends up, more because at 36/37 froch looked finished as a top level fighter in the first fight. Admittedly it was always going to be a close fight...which it was however you scored it. But i also had groves to shock froch the first fight before a punch was thrown. Sometimes some styles just dont suit others. And george is a dangerous fighter in his own right.


I dont think many are backtracking...their holding up their hands saying they got it wrong...and giving froch the credit for it...thats all i ve seen anyway.

Although he definetely wasn't winning comfortably...it's hard to make a case for him losing comfortably taking into account he landed 30 punches more than froch did.

 

I think we need to wait until he's actually achieved something of major note before worrying whether he's at the wrong weight. Back to back defeats by Froch are the two best things to have happened to Groves in terms of profile. At this stage it's just as likely that, along with the vast majority of us, he simply isn't good enough to compete at world class level (or international superstar level as Froch says lol).

If I was Groves I'd be looking at my financial situation. He could have another 10 years fighting at the top, maybe just a year. I wouldn't blame him for cherry picking his next few fights and working towards lining up another sizable payday. But he's only 25, probably feels there's nothing to stop him being the best. So my guess is there'll be another defeat inside 12 months or so.

And will never get the chance. He had his moment rnds 2-6 in the first fight and wasnt strong enough to do it despite him being, in his own words, such a big puncher.

Groves did/still does have the tools. I was banking on groves using the same game plan as per the first fight just with better conditioning and knowing not to get involved in a slugfest with the terminator. Throw bombs and move, not throw bombs and stand in the pocket

What I wasn't expecting was for groves to fight a totally different gameplan and be as gun shy and as negative as he was, being pushed back..

Groves did start to get a bit too comfortable in the ring on Saturday because he didn't take any big shots until the KO. I had groves up on points he landed the harder cleaner shots but still not much landed from either fighter which made for a boring fight IMO.

I think Degale will suffer a late TKO if he faces this version of froch. I'd like to see froch step up a weight class seeing as he has faced everyone in this division, but I think he will face bika next which is very winnable for froch.

Groves needs to chane trainer I think paddy is a bit inexperienced at this level, and he confidence will be shot to **** after the KO.

I was annoyed as **** after round 2 as I knew then it was no way gonna be the fight I had hoped of...

Well by that logic Froch was up in first fight, as landed and throw a lot more punches than GG, including more power punches. Check HBO stats on fight. Froch controlled centre of ring, and pace of 2nd fight, was always looking a different league to GG, and knocked him out as I said he would. Gulf in class

My final thought are this, fair play to the good posters on esb who picked GG but backed it up with some logic but also gave froch a good chance. No problem with them posters

There are certain posters who said froch had zero chance, said only a moron would say froch would win. Well this is to theses people who I don't really need to name you have proved you know f@@k all about boxing

 

Wow moog, i m shocked at that just seen the stats and it was something like froch landed 108 power punches to groves's 77. The thing is...in that 77 power punches we're talking big big shots, to froch's 108 power shots that werent. Do you agree with that?? But i concede my point after seeing that.

Saturdays fight was hard to score...whatever way you looked at it...i wouldn't be saying anybody was wrong either way. Groves fans had groves up or close surprisingly lol, and froch fans had froch up. I m groves and had groves up by one lol, to me george has the eye-catching punches thats not because i m a groves fan, i just dont think froch's punches look as powerful or eye catching...which is a disservice to the man because we know they are heavy handed shots that do damage...but how do we judge that...do we say well it's froch it doesn't look much but he's got heavy hands?? And i think it comes down to that if we we are then froch was winning on my card. I still dont think froch's punches look more powerful than george's. George's punches look more powerful that they actually are in fairness. Thats where the different scorecards come in for me. I will probably always score groves work better than others because i like his work...and thats why i m a fan. I would say it's not as simple as downright bias. What i will say is if the fight went to points after the seventh round for example...if i was to pick a winner i woulg go for froch...because he's the champion, he controlled the centre of the ring plus he did control the pace to an extent. It's hard scoring some fights...for example say round 3 george hit froch with 13 punches and they looked good punches to carls 10 but he controlled the centre of the ring who do you give it too?? It goes down to personel preference for me...and thats why i cant argue either way...i think it's fair to say it was a close enough fight as a whole until froch detonated him.

But i believed froch was going to win that fight...weather the knock out punch landed or not...but can we count that in his favour. We cant.

In hindsight i think the only thing thats 100% certain from the two fights is that george groves...doesn't have the durability for world level or carl froch...personally i dont think he ever will...but he will probably still win a world title.

I think there's a lot of people out there that have been vocal about froch beating groves easy because of a gulf in class...and shown saturday night as proof. And are now making out that they are boxing experts

I was vocal not on here but to friends on saturday morning about george having too much for froch...but i wasn't 100% certain, i think for a start the game plan was different he wasn't trying to be too much for him anyway,...i wouldn't have been surprised if froch won i knew how dangerous he was...but it didn't stop me being vocal about it. If groves would have won it wouldn't have made me a boxing expert like we're all claiming now.

I dont think they're was a froch fan out there that wasn't a bit worried about it regardless of what they say or said...froch certainly was. It was just an off night for him the first fight...and yet he still changed his preparations for it. Stayed away in sheffield 5 days a week...introduced a new sport physciatrist or whatever it was and even stopped riding his bird 3 months beforehand lol...**** that she's a mouthy **** but she's a decent bit crumpet.

I still say that george groves comes out the two fights looking maybe a little better than he came in regardless of the hyperbole...we have a habit of either championing people or writing them off...depending on the results nowadays and it doesn't tell the full story. In hindsight the only thing i can take 100% from the 2 fights is...george groves has durability problems and carl froch has still got it at 36 years of age. I dont think anybody can really go too much further on it and say much else and be 100% certain like george cant punch hard enough for world level...he certainly had froch in probably the most trouble i ve ever seen him in. George groves cant fight at that level 100%...over the 2 fights he caused carl froch enough problems to suggest he can. etc etc etc.

 

A lot of fighters caused champions problems that where never heard of again.
