Gonzalez is hacking down with the left jab. Farmer is circling right and checking the jab with his right. Gonzalez falls in with a straight combo, missing over the head of Farmer and pulling him into a clinch. Gonzalez lands a right hand on the crown in the pocket as Farmer lands a big right hook up top. A couple of left hands by Farmer, dancing mercurially around Gonzalez. Right hands spammed in by Gonzalez, clapping off Farmer's shoulder, a few getting in downstairs or grazing up by Farmer's left temple. Lots of head movement and weaving by Farmer as he moves in and out of the pocket, working left uppercuts to the body when Gonzalez grabs him. Farmer ducks a left jab and clings briefly onto Gonzalez, flinging himself outside. Slow telegraphed 1-2 by Gonzalez, dodged. Left to the body by Farmer, stuffed on the right arm by Gonzalez. 1-2 by Gonzalez as Farmer is throwing a right hook, arms deflecting off each other. Two left hands thumping onto the chest by Farmer. Right hook flush on the chin by Farmer!

There were a couple of rounds in which he was made to look relatively less foolish - but none he came even close to winning.

 

Quick side note: I really hope Michael Clark retires.

He was a world class operator in the nineties and early part of the new millennium, but was already way past his best (and punching above his peak weight) in season 2 of the Contender, when he was eliminated by career light middleweight K9 Bundrage in a size mismatch where he still gave a scrappy account of himself - and established what a limited fighter the eventual paper titlist K9 really was.

That was eight years ago.

He now has been stopped eight times - thrice in a row, twice in the first round, and in four of his last five outings. He is forty years old. I really hope this is no matter of needing the money too badly to stop. :verysad

None of that is meant to discredit Kavanagh, but really guys like him (or even some lesser guys) are too much for Clark at this point and that kind of matchmaking shouldn't be sanctioned.

 

Michael Hill interviews Freddie Roach on Fox Sports Live.

Hill asks how & why they have clicked so well and so quickly.

Roach says he learned Cotto's mistakes and flaws when Pacquiao fought him, and he uses the foundation of knowing his weaknesses as knowing what to work on. He says Cotto is among the most disciplined and hardest workers he ever met.

Hill asks what flaws & weaknesses he is referring to and how Roach has cleaned them up.

Roach says Cotto spends too much time on the ropes and over the years got away from his left hook on the body, so there has been a lot of drilling the idea of staying off the ropes and working that money punch.

Hill asks what if Roach had trained Cotto earlier, could he possibly have avoided some or all of his four losses?

Roach says they get along great and camp runs smoothly, everything is cooperative and non-adversarial and they are like family. He says he doesn't like watching Cotto's old fights, including the losses, because he is a different fighter now. He says it would be hard to say what might happen differently if they were together back then. He says dwelling on the past is no good. Roach says Cotto has more tools now and has ring generalship, which is something Roach has passed on and was passed onto him by Eddie Futch - and something Martinez is poor at.

Roach says after Martinez he and Cotto are gunning for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, because Cotto feels that with Roach in his corner he could knock Mayweather out.


Hill of course asks Roach about Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, and Roach says he thinks and hopes they will probably fight soon, maybe before the end of this year. Roach doesn't think Mayweather is scared necessarily, but says that he knows Pacquiao will give him problems and that it will be tough for both of them.

Hill asks Roach about Martinez. Roach says he is a good athlete, with great natural speed and some other assets, including conditioning from years of soccer, but he is not that good a boxer. He says he (Roach) and Cotto boxed from a young age, so the skills are ingrained, but Martinez is now in deep water as he never learned the craft that well and just relied on his speed and conditioning until now.

Roach says Cotto is even more disciplined and has a greater work ethic than Pacquiao.

Hill asks whether venturing up to middleweight could be challenging. Roach says he is confident in Cotto eating and training right and being comfortable at 160. He says they will use their superior boxing skills and test just how fast Martinez is. He says he will eventually tell Cotto to finish him off when he sees that Martinez is ready, and Cotto will increase the pressure and shut him down and knock him out.

 

NY commission has changed their minds about not allowing Martinez to wear the knee braces. I wonder why they tried to keep Martinez from wearing them? Can anyone guess?
