Martinez is also getting Argentina TV money plus PPV upside he will make way more that 1.5 mil. He had a similar deal for the Chavez Jr fight and walked away with like 6 mil. 99% of boxers don't make that in their whole career let alone 1 fight.

If Cotto wins impressively Martinez is going to look like a sacrifical lamb.....capitulated to the demands despite being the champ and then gets sparked out.

Cotto is bringing the money in but no matter how you look at it 82/18 to the challenger is highway robbery and blatantly insulting. Here's hoping Martinez makes him earn it the hard way.

At best, Cotto is the fourth best opponent Martinez has faced.

Well if thats what it takes to get a 'name' in the ring.....more fighters should take a leaf out of Sergio's book.

    Fair play to him.

what the **** are some of you people talking about...

what's unfair about this? what tickets does sergio sell? what ppvs does sergio sell? This guy is the definition of a b-side. Especially when facing someone like cotto.

Serge is lucky to even have this opportunity. Cotto could sell out MSG fighting max kellerman.

Margarito made $2.5M in the Cotto rematch. :!:

Opportunity to give a shot for his belt for a guy who lost two of his last three fights in a lower division?

there's literally 4 belts per division. Belts don't mean **** any more.

    names > belts

Cotto don't need martinez at all. He coudl take a bunch of joke fights in msg for the money and ride off into the sunset. Meanwhile sergio is still fighting to prove hiimself. be real with yourself

    Cotto has already won then.

And about it not being fair - This is how business works. The world is not fair.

    Response to your points:

    1. The main objective of any kind of business is to generate the maximum amount of money. If the 'morally right' thing can go hand in hand with that, nice. If not, business is business.

    2. Source? I don't know anything about the demographic of ticket buyers for this event, and i don't know if those numbers are anywhere to be found. What i do know is that 10% of the population of NY is puertorican/of puertorican descent, and that Cotto has a history of packing MSG to the rafters based on THAT demographic number.

    Martinez' purse history
    vs Murray ?
    vs Chavez Jr 1.4 mil
    vs Macklin ?
    vs Barker 1.5 Million
    vs Dzinziruk 1.2 Million
    vs Williams ?
    vs Pavlik ?
    vs Williams ?
    vs Cintron ?

All the articles I've pulled up looking for the others don't have any details but the consensus is that Martinez does not get paid well. Top Rank, Goldenboy, or Hayman are usually pretty good about such things, but if he's signed with DiBella maybe things are different. It says on wikipedia that Hopkins was signed with Dibella and he didn't get a paycheck until his forties. I hope that Sergio has some good endorsement deals at least.

If I recall, Martinez was getting 1.something million for Macklin, at least that for Murray, that stadium sold out, Williams II, etc. Martinez hasn't gotten less than 1 million a fight in a while.

Martinez vs anyone else in that arena would be half the arena and not PPV.
