Tony Mundine fought Carlos Monzon in Buenos Aires in 1974. Monzon was 82-3-9 at the time and hadn't lost for 10 years. Tony didn't get to hear the 7th round bell. But Monzon was perhaps the greatest middleweight of all time and if Mundine had have been born in another era he very likely would have won a world title.
Tony must have the biggest collection of championship belts in Aussie boxing history. Just a pity there's no world titles amongst them.
Tony Mundine won the following titles : Commonwealth middleweight Commonwealth light heavyweight Australian middleweight Australian light heavyweight Australian cruiserweight Australian heavyweight
Probably would have too. Tony's problem was he cleaned out all the local guys his own size fairly quickly. Then had to fight bigger guys to get some worthwhile competition.
Sam Soliman fought the 29-0 Howard Eastman for the Commonwealth middleweight title back in 2000, in London. He put up a solid performance. But Eastman got the nod by a few rounds. This was Soliman's 3rd attempt at a Commonwealth title in only his 16th pro fight. Amazingly 14 years later, Solomon at 40 is now IBF world champion, and Eastman, at 43, is still active and has a fight coming up in about a weeks time.
Vic Patrick and Ambrose Palmer had the same problem as Tony. Started to run out of locals at their own weight who could provide them with a contest. Both then fought bigger imported opponents.
The on-line description for this site reads: "Boxing forum with discussions on the latest boxing news, upcoming fights, results and boxing history". Not much in the Aussie forum resembles anything like that description above. However, In these two MEMORABLE FIGHT threads we are endeavouring to talk boxing. Less all the brainless argument and name calling that happens elsewhere. For that reason I have requested this thread and the other be STICKIED, and I don't think that's an unreasonable request when you consider there was a RUGBY thread STICKIED here not long ago. If, on the off chance these threads are deemed not suitable to be STICKIED it's a goodbye from me and I've enjoyed your participation in these two threads. The only ones here where genuine boxing discussion takes place :good
I asked the mods to show support for serious boxing discussion at this forum by STICKYING this and the other similar thread. After a week. Not STICKIED and not even the courtesy of a reply about it. Conclusion: The mods here have no regard for serious boxing discussion and the butt for the deplorable state of this forum falls fair and square at their feet. There are far better places to discuss boxing. This is my final post here :hi:
Good riddance The mods do a fine job, now fuk off and join the backslappers where you belong :finger:finger
You said that in your memorable bouts on Aussie soil. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=507485&page=9 Why chuck a tanty because the mods won't sticky your threads? Seems a bit precious to me but see ya.
If ever a forum needed Mods to do a fine job it is this one. But the reality is every thread here is hijacked and destroyed by the same little band of losers and the Mods do absolutely nothing about it.
