It's obvious he must have lied about his condition at some point to get a fight like that setup... If I was a commisioner and knew a guy had knee problems THAT BAD I would NEVER let him fight in a main event where people will shell out millions to see him... I liked Sergio. I've been a fan for a while. But I feel pretty sad that he did that. Maybe he felt like he was doing the right thing by pressing on as hard as he could but as I watched the 24/7's and heard him talk about the knees and how he thought he might not be able to walk again. But now hes fine... I didn't buy it. Which is why I didn't place money on him. I feel bad for folks who paid $65 for this.
As if you really pay for any PPV. Martinez got hit over and over and over in the head by Cotto. Bad or good legs, if you get hit by those clean punches your legs will go down.
They just did an MRI this past week per the request of the New York State Athletic commission and was cleared for the fight.
He was mobile because moving in and out doesn't require one to bend his knees as much as slipping and weaving. When slipping punches there should be a significant bend in the knee while doing so. When Sergio was ducking punches you could tell he was primarily bending at the waist.
Well shame on them then. They probably knew how messed up it was and should have done something. But HBO didn't want Sergio to walk away with the lineal title. It couldn't have been transferred to Golovkin, which needs to happen to make sure they own the MW division. Who can I write to get the ball rolling on this. There is too much corruption in boxing and it needs to be exposed.
give cotto credit...he stepped up into the plate and executed.... injury or not...cotto won because he fought to win....
Sad indeed. But i can't believe he didn't know about how bad his condition was. He was probably planning on cashing out, and in that, ggg would have brought less views and a worse beating. With the moneys he earned for this fight, he can live well for the rest of his life. But it's true, he kinda robbed us all.
This is the same commission that cleared Magomed after his last fight, just to walk outside and nearly die
Anyone could tell that Martinez' knees were shot from the first round on, good reason for the knee braces.................no fine possible, so no, he should not be fined at all. He knew that his knees were shot before the fight, he refused to fight Golovkin because he wanted the most money for his retirement fight...........Golovkin would have knocked him out in the first round. Possible fight for Golovkin will be Cotto, but doubt if Cotto will fight him. Pac stopped Cotto, made him a bloody mess. Golovkin will fight Geale next, they are in talks with Soliman for a unification fight. Quillin will not go near Golovkin...........
I blame the comission who test these guys. Not only did they let cripple Martinez box when they clearly shouldn't have, but they also let Holyfield fight at 50. Clearly, money takes priority over everything.
He thought even with his completely shot knees, his size and punching power be too much. He was wrong.
