It seem's like an overnight thing, IMHO.

How did he go from laying out the likes of Williams with one punch, and beating Pavlik to getting dropped on the regular?

Also, his knee problems... How did they start/what was the cause of it?

its def not an overnight thing

he showed signs of decline in chavez fight and even said in an interview his knees were affecting him then

to my knowledge he damaged it against Chavez during the later period of the fight (may have even been before then) hence why he went down so easily the second time in round 12 and took his time getting up.

he then had a surgery on his knee going into the Murray fight where it was still strained and in lasts night fight it seems to have gone completely even after another surgery (im sure hes had like 3 surgeries now for his knee and other areas too)

As for the knockdowns the big flaw in Martinez' style is that although he can move around the ring at ease whilst seemingly fighting in straight lines is that his balance isnt incredibly good

Williams 1 - Dropped in the first round but not hurt, loses his footing and goes down
Pavlik - Gets caught backing up at an angle and again not hurt but goes down

Its been the same story time and time again although did get put down genuinely against chavez in round 12 first time, no denying that.

As for the cause i have no idea other than I know Sergio was a cyclist before he stepped into the boxing ring so im assuming its injuries from all the road work finally caught up to him at his old age

He got dropped fighting 8 rounders a lot of his "knockdowns" were bad footwork and been off balanced rather then been chinny and not taking a punch

Think the Chavez Jnr fight was his "peak" with all the injuries it jus went downhill.. I mean the guys 39 FFS and relies on speed and reflexes with injuries it was never guna end well

Didn't think it'd be as bad as last night though

c'mon, dude...do you watch boxing at all? sergio martinez is one of the most overrated fighters out there...it used to **** me off that they kept repeating on tv that he was the #3 pfp guy. did you not notice that after the williams rematch (sergio lost the first williams fight) that martinez went on a euro-tour? between the barker and murray fights i started to notice a steady decline, even though he beat up chavez jr pretty convincingly. macklin was AHEAD after 6 rounds..and murray actually WON the fight (even if he got robbed)? i guess you didn't notice any of those things because you're not really a boxing fan. so,

This Martinez is a warrior, and he pulled off the win many times, but he did loose vs Murray, and had not been looking all that well on his previous fights.

That 12th round with Chavez ruined Martinez's knee and he hasn't been the same since.

IT started when Sergio injured his knee, he has nothing to prove had a great career and should retire now as a happy man.

Since 2012 how much has he actually spent on training for boxing? No rehabilitation or general fitness but just work on his boxing? 6 months?
Maybe even 7 but one would probably be stretching it. I think his age caught up to him and he sure as hell looked like a 39 year old in that ring.

He still looked good against Jr, but the Murray fight showed the cracks - Sergio might have recovered from the immediate injuries, but time was clearly catching up and a speedster is never gonna improve as they age... I don't think we'll see any more of Maravilla now - and to be honest, the idea of a Golovkin - Maravilla bout at this point is simply distasteful.
