I just made a post stating he was the lineal champ, and this was based upon what Max said post fight

However how did he actually become lineal champ? How like he be ranked above golovkin or even quillin in his first fight?

Golovkin is the best middleweight in the world today. Everyone has refused to fight him. Golovkin will knock Cotto out if Cotto has the balls to get into a ring with him. HBO wants this fight, but Cotto will not go anywhere near Golovkin.............

    Taylor won it from Hopkins.

    Pavlik won it from Taylor.

    Sergio won it from Pavlik.

    Cotto won it from Sergio.

You don't have to be ranked #2 at the weight to win the title. Similar to a fighter moving up in weight, if the man with the belt is putting it on the line than it doesn't matter the quality of the fighter he lost to.

He is the lineal champ but strangely he's not the best in the division.

Cotto is the lineal middleweight champ, despite what the people who want him to fight a junior middleweight next try to tell you.

Personally, I really wish they would stop trying to discredit Cotto that way.
The man is a MW now.:D

Canelo has not done enough to earn a fight with the lineal middleweight champ.
He isn't even undefeated at JMW and he's just going to waltz on in and fight the lineal champ at MW? What's Canelo's best win @160? Who he beat?:think
Wake me up when he fights a real MW. Hell, I think a guy like Sergio Mora could give Canelo problems.

Cotto is indeed the lineal MW champion of the world - doesn't matter that he didn't even win it at 160lb or that he isn't even a MW.

I don't believe Cotto is the best MW in the world, but that is a different matter.

I also think that it'd be a damn shame for him to put that Lineal title on the line against another non-MW and that it would irredeemably taint the credibility of the Hopkins lineage if he did, but it wouldn't actually change the fact of the matter.

Yes, it's pretty clear that Cotto is the lineal middleweight champion now.

Now it's an entirely different thing whether he is or isn't actually the best middleweight in the world. It would be shame if the lineal MW championship gets stuck in fights between guys from lower divisions. If Cotto has no plans to establish himself at middleweight, it would be right to vacate the title.

which is good for us because its a reason for other fighters to actually want to fight him.

alot of 154's are going to be willing to move up n fight him.

and plenty of 160s and maybe he can fight sum one from gbp to end the cold war

Yes, Cotto IS the lineal champ. Let's see if he honors the obligations of being a true champion, i.e., will he now fight the other MW belt holders, GGG and Quillen?

Doesn't matter what I believe. Right now he is officially considered the #1 Middleweight.

If that's what lineal champ means to you then you have got it way overrated. It doesn't mean they're some type of robotic destroyer, it just means that they beat the most respected person in the division.
