How much credit do you give Cotto for his win over Martinez?

Cotto fought Martinez because he knew that Martinez was finished as a fighter, no knees, no balance, could not even spar..............

Roach pretty much admitted that it was known Sergio was done before the fight. But, Cotto deserves all the accolades. He looked great in there..

The same amount of credit i give Holmes for beating Ali.

Sergio was there for the taking after the Murray fight.

If that wasn't enough, put over a year and a half of inactivity , multiple surgeries and time off pent in crutches on top of it.

Cotto and Roach knew what they were getting and thats why they made the offer.

Sergio without his athleticism was just a punching bag.

Credit should be reserved for guys who actually win competative fights against live bodies.

I listened to Ronnie Shields on The Pugilist KOrner earlier and he said that it was known throughout boxing circles that Martinez was done for.

It's not Cotto's fault. He was ready, but Martinez was a shell of a fighter. Nothing was really learned from this fight about Cotto.

Considering Cotto was "shot" 4 years ago.. I would say it is a legit win.

Legit win for sure. This didn't happen on paper or through vacated belts and sanctioning body nonsense. The two guys stepped into the ring and better man left as THE MW CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! :good :rasta

He was supposed to lose based on the assumption that Martinez was going to be healthy or close to it. But anyone with eyes could see that he couldn't even plant off his right knee and was favoring it from the get go. He was fighting a one legged gimp. How many times did the he stumble/fall because he didn't have his knee under him? This isn't about being old/shot, it's about having an injury which clearly prevented him from doing the most basic things. Everything starts with your legs. So yeah, of course he looked terrible because he only had one good leg. It affected everything he did.

This win is an absolute joke. It means nothing to me. Had Cotto actually fought a Martinez that was clearly healthy but just looked old/shot, I would have no problems with it. But this is different. He had an injury which prevented him from doing the most basic things in boxing.

Ask yourself this. How many 154 and 160 fighters beat that one legged version of Martinez? I would say a lot.

It was a great win for Cotto. Especially at this late stage of his career.
The truth is, Martinez like many Argentine fighters is a great boxer. In fact, he is much more a brawler than fighter and a good boxer like Cotto will most always win against this kind of opponent.

I would compare Martinez's level of boxing skill to just below those of a Carl Froch. I always knew that one day Martinez at the hands of a skilled boxer would pay dearly for keeping his hands at his waist. That day came at Madison Square Garden and marks the end of Martinez.s career.

Anyone who has ever boxed knows that everything you do starts with your legs. If you can't plant and explode and pivot off one of your legs, you are literally a dead man walking. You can't generate any power, you can't move back to defend and you can't control distance. That's what Sergio was. A guy who was clearly favoring his right knee and it nearly gave out on him several times. He was fighting just not to injure his knee further. Forget about winning a fight. And people actually give credit to Cotto for this win? I give Cotto credit for taking on the challenge but not the win.

He deserves credit for being completely overlooked. Sure Martinez was clearly out of it completely but Cotto took care of business like almost everyone didn't expect him to.
