When I look at the history of boxing and all the greats like Ali, Robinson, Louis, etc. who ended their careers broke, I am so glad to see boxers getting a handle on the business side of boxing. Even though right now this is just Mayweather, pretty soon the majority of fighters will stop signing contracts with promoters and promoters will be hired on a fight by fight basis. Then we will see better fights because the promoters won't be trying to out position each other, but rather will have to bid for the job to promote a single fight. People hate Floyd now, but what he is doing is going to trickle through the industry and make boxing considerably better.

Hopefully the next generation of boxers takes notes. I would love a boxing world with nothing but free agents. They could really take power from promoters.

He's not the greatest of all time, but he's the best boxing businessmen ever. Constantly making the best decisions for himself and was loyal to himself before any other promoters. Because promoters look out for themselves.

S/O Fmj for making the right decisions.

Hopefully the next generation can free themselves from promoters, and boxing could change the sanctioning and we can have some order so that the best can fight the best.

And as fans in the next generation, we should boycott the **** out of PPV fights if we don't see any changes.

sadly, most people will remember "Floyd Mayweather Jr: the man of 1000 excuses" rather than "Floyd Mayweather Jr: The Beast" from earlier in his tremendous career

Agreed. There's always more hate than love to go around. Hopefully overtime is slows down though.

I thought we were gonna talk about how his skill sets changed the world not his business life. if you dont wanna be known as a dick rider dont ride the dick

New topic: how his skills changed boxing
I've seen a lot more fighters more often nowadays using the roll as part of their defense. They control the head and pivot out of danger. I've seen more kids at the gym do pull back counters and slip the left hook. Floyd showed how to neutralize almost every single fighter.

Initially I wasn't particularly a fan of Floyd...but over time I've appreciated the dedication to his craft and the maniacal drive he has demonstrated to stay on top. Floyd is not "TBE" but he is highly skilled, and should be considered a great...and he has played the game...the game hasn't played him...and that is a very good thing in boxing. Boxing is a sport that chews people up and spits them out...People end up injured and penniless. Boxing needs more success stories... Props to Mayweather!

i can't give floyd all the credit you are giving him. back when oscar left arum and started his own promotional company...i thought he was the guy that was changing the game. when bhop, barrera and mosley joined him they seemed to form a great alliance. what followed was more of the same (business as usual) as oscar maneuvered his way through it all. floyd aligning himself with al haymon was the greatest move he ever made. i believe al haymon is the guy who truly changed the game and is continuing to do so. we can say without a doubt that floyd has benefitted tremendously from haymons knowledge and business acumen. it would seem that oscar has made a huge mistake by allowing schaeffer to leave his company. it's a setback for what al has in place. oscar has given more power back to the old school promoters with this move. i also believe this is the direct result of kathy duvas bull**** lawsuit. bull****....much the same way i viewed articles written by thomas hauser a few years ago making haymon out to be the boogie man....and hbo's failures being a direct result of their business with haymon. we're talking about two lawyers...arum and kathy duva trying to out-think a swiss banker and a harvard educated business man. this **** is playing out like a chess match. i won't hide it...i'm rooting for haymon and schaeffer. their model is the best for all parties involved.

what has toprank and mainevents given us over the last few years? a bunch of robberies and bull**** decisions. controversy for the most part. gbp was pretty much separating itself from the pack as the best promoters in boxing. i fear that arum who understands very well how to manipulate the media is throwing a wrench into the game. oscar is being very reactionary. i don't know that he's thought this whole thing through.

main events had the nbc deal and what do they do with it? force feed us adamek. he has two controversial wins against cunningham and chambers...but that doesn't stop them from bringing him back. where are your young guns??? where's the new talent? wasted opportunities on network television.

contrary to popular belief...the cold war has been a good thing. we got a lot of fights that wouldn't have normally happened under normal circumstances.

arum was forced to match donaire against rigondeaux.

floyd fought canelo when everyone said he wouldn't.

canelo fought trout when everyone said he wouldn't.

garcia fought matthysse when everyone said he wouldn't.

canelo is fighting lara when everyone said he wouldn't.

i can keep going but i think i proved my point.

don't get me wrong....boxing needs promoters. there wouldn't be shows without them. what boxing doesn't need is promoters who force feed the public and manipulate **** behind the scenes.
