Yes he did , he is one the top 20 fighters of the 21st century and was clearly the best middleweight until Golovkin's notoriety grew
I wouldn't put him in, but the standards and criteria for the IBHOF are obviously different than mine, so who knows? There's a lot of other fighters who aren't in Canastota that should be in before Sergio gets in, and certainly should have gotten in before Arturo Gatti.
Not in my opinion. His best wins were Pav and Williams. But he was much better than the Cotto fight showed. Sucks that that fight took place.
He probably needed to win the Cotto fight to get in. As it stands, I'd put Sergio in the Hall of Very Good, not necessarily the Hall of Fame. Had he gotten better breaks earlier in his career, he probably would've had it in him. His exposure just came too late.
Personally I think it's too easy to be inducted these days Martinez was a gd champion but really who did he beat? Without the ko of Williams Martinez ain't really all that, ppl will say aww but he beat Pavlik? But Kelly's fall from grace shows he wasn't up to much neither and that victory may have been overstated at the time But as Arturo Gatti is in there sure why don't we just induct every fighter who has had a memorable fight?
For the record though, Gatti was murdered and made to look like a suicide. That's got to count for something.
He's better than many that are currently in... but in my opinion the standards should be higher than then are, and he would likely fall short of it. I hate saying it, because I love the way Sergio boxes (oddly enough), but he really didn't amass enough quality scalps to warrant entry.
