    If so, why not?

I think Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight of all time, and one of the greatest p4p who ever lived

Most folks have him at 2, and quite a few at 1.

Ali is clear number one for me.

I dont think Louis would be as sucessful against all the other ATG HWs as Lewis would be or maybe Holmes or even Evander.

If we had a league table and each guys fought each other twice. Ali would be topping the league every season. Louis wouldnt, ever. (IMO)

Ali is better and as a legacy goes, Joe ranks higher than basically anyone. However from a P4P perspective he does terribly. Joe record looks great but he fought most terrible opponents. Can you imagine the outrage if Wlad side stepped David Haye and fought Billy Conn instead? Some of these mediocre fighters like Tony Galento dropped and hurt Louis. How many times was Louis down in his career?

he's not on mine and even 30 years ago he wasn't

but I would def place him ahead of someone like Lennox Lewis

I mean Lewis was okay, but JUST okay

Joe Louis seemed to have everything in place. I mean he still has the record 25 defenses but the talent then was quite poor. And those werent healthy specimens of men. I mean look at them!

    Tony Galento?

IMO, I honestly believe a prime Dempsey would have trounced him

    Jeffries & Johnson certainly

Ali, I'm not too sure about and would favor Joe by pts or late tko the way Ali allowed himself to get hit, and based on the Norton fight

others like Holyfield, Joe would have a field day and take him apart little by little, culminating in a savage tko

Bowe I believe would outlast him in a battle of attrition which only Bowe would win becuz Bowe knows boxing!

Larry Holmes I believe would lay Joe unconscious with that thudding right hand

The interesting part is those of Louis generation, and the generation before him for the most part did not see him as a top 1 or 2 ATG.

I can't see how he couldn't be. No one has even come close to tying or breaking is title reign record and I'm not sure how many others have as many wins over past, present and future world champs, unless we're talking about wins over fragment holders. Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis are interchangeable for the #1 spot in my opinion. I currently have Muhammad in that position, but have no problem with anyone who has them reversed.
