Does anyone not rate Joe Louis in there top 2 heavyweights of all time list?

I repeat: there is no shame in having been run close by Conn (once, then destroying him in the rematch).

If you want to draw a comparison between the Conn and Haye performances and place blame on anyone, then place it on Klitschko for not doing to an evasive Haye over twelve what Louis managed to do to an evasive Conn in eight.

 

Conn was a shell of a shell in 46. Horrible analogy.

 

The answer for me is Louis in 4. Dempsey had a kiddie pool shallow resume, often a spastic game plan and holes in his defense big enough to guide a barge through...

That a fighter might do this out of vanity & a misguided sense of fainess is not at all "laughable". Do just a bit of research before you respond with reflexive contempt. You will see that Louis DID weight drain himself & was at least somewhat dehydrated & Chappy was angry at him for it.

Now Dempsey had exponentially more losses, worse even forgetting his hobo days, a right away kayo by Fireman FLynn who did not have near the skilld of Louis, a much shorter prime, others are correct about his weaker resume, less endurance, much less defensive skills...
Dempsey was not bulky & the only thing that would give him a shot would be early power.

But Louis beat harder hitters & I see no reason to favor Dempsey.

 

With such a leaky defence its strange no one knocked him out for the ten years between 1917 and 1927,and he was only floored 3 times during that period.:huh

In contrast Louis was kod twice and dropped 12 times,during a comparable period, perhaps he slipped over on the ring logos?

 

aggressive styles make for openings in defensive and both men were successfully aggressive. Louis was more active but his recuperative ability and rematch improvement were the greatest of all heavyweights and he beat all sizes colors and shapes and for the longest period ducking no man

He had better rematch ability then Ali, I think Marciano & Lewis are on that list but Joe tops it, Holmes is on the low end and Dempsey lost to Tunney although rusty he bettered his performance still no cigar

Louis was only stopped while Young & old
put Schmeling or Walcott in with Ali instead of Cooper and we may see an early KO loss on his record.

Louis got Ko'd by Marciano, Holmes by Tyson,and Ali by Holmes and we all have to agree it would have happened to Dempsey had it not been the lighter punching Tunney (who dropped Jack )

 

No one gave Conn a shadow of a chance in that first fight. By all standards and by everyone's opinion, he was supposed to get mutilated. Conn was shot in the rematch.

 

And many of them had him on the floor.None of them could hit like Dempsey.

If Louis's defence was so much better than Dempsey's how come he got dropped so much? Dempsey was far more aggressive than Louis.

Big Bulky fighters got taken out by Louis, fast evasive ones gave him trouble and fast, evasive ones with top end power spell disaster.

 

Because he was inactive?

Fact is, 28 year old Conn tried not engaging Joe Louis (25lbs heavier and never exactly lauded for his fleetness of foot) and was tracked down and mulched in eight. 30 year old Haye tried not engaging Wladimir Klitschko (32lbs heavier but considered as having exceptional foot speed for a super heavy, certainly quicker-moving and more athletic than Louis) and got away with it Scot free.

 

Louis didn't have great recuperative powers at all ,he fought the first Schmeling fight in a fog and didn't even know he had hit Max low in one round. Great recuperative powers? No one had better than Holmes , then Ali. Louis isnt in it. Louis never fought a southpaw.

Dempsey was only stopped once ,when young and green and there is a question mark about the bonafides of that ko.

 

You base this on all the early Dempsey footage you have seen?

Please put up the Miske ,Fulton,Smith,Morris fights, I'm sure we would all like a chance to evaluate him on those performances.


Not fast handed cuties like Galento,Simon,Roper,Musto,Mauriello,Burman, Dorazio,Godoy,Paycheck,McCoy ???????

 

Is it possible , just possible that a lot of Dempsey's ko wins have never been before your eyes? If that is so, I don't see how you are in a position to evaluate those opponents.

Just in passing.Schmeling called Dempsey the greatest heavyweight he ever saw, he fought Louis twice and sparred with an older Dempsey.Ray Arcel who trained and seconded about 20 boxers against Louis said Dempsey was superior to Louis.
Jack Sharkey fought both, he picked Dempsey.

I'm happy to be in their company.

 

Ali, Lewis, Foreman, the K bros, Tyson, holyfield and Larry all probably beat him h2h but for some reason that's not how people rank fighters.
