Because at his best, he was that damn good. Tyson literally looked invincible, even moreso than Ali in his prime. Tyson was never knocked by a Henry Cooper. In his prime you can count about 2 good punches that landed on him (Tucker and Smith) thats how good his defence was.
Yup. After he split with Rooney, I remember Rooney saying, "I thought we were going to go to 99-0." And really that's the way the fans felt, too.
Its a little known and understated fact, but it was actually Rooney who caused the split between him and Tyson. Not a lot of people know that. Take from Tysons autobiography. Tyson 'suspended' Rooney from his corner for the Bruno fight, as 'punishment' for speaking out on his private like (Robin Givens etc). After the Bruno fight, Tyson was meant to take Rooney back. However during that one fight suspension, Rooney sued Tyson, so Tyson basically said, screw you you're never going to work in my corner again.
Haha, Douglass a fat diabetic? No on that night in Tokyo, he was in great shape and would have troubled any HW champ that ever lived that night. Mike was young, exciting, just destroying people left and right. He really epitomized the 80s and reflected his era, as all champions do. He moved like a middleweight, and was undefeated, undisputed, unified, and lineal champ at what 22? Seriously you have to bet everything you have against Tyson who are you gonna bet your apartment/car/house etc on?! Ali that's about it. Tysons got a great chance of sparking amost anyone else. Of course he had his problems, growing up like that aint easy, hence his mean streak in the ring. However I always admired the mean streaks of Bowe and Tyson, both from Brownsville.
I never knew about the suspension or that Mike was going to take Rooney back. Interesting. Was that in the book?
Young, American, Heavyweight KO artist with speed. All the hype factors, only way he could've been more hyped is if he was white.
Prime Tyson may be as good as anyone ever. He smoked crack, drank, didn't train, didn't sleep, chased women, had no business or sense with women, basically did almost everything wrong he possibly could. In addititon, he was mentally unstable and lost every stabilizing force he had in his life. He ran off Rooney, ended up training himself basically, even tho he did little training, and STILL managed to be relevant for a long long time. BUT... IN his short prime, he was unlike anyone we have ever seen. He beat guys before they got in the ring. He was unreal quick, had excellent head movement and defense, one punch power in both hands, and was accurate and busy. But eventually it caught up to him. If you judge his whole career, he is overrated. But for a time, he may have been as good or better than anyheavyweight who ever lived.
defense?? did u watch the douglas fight, the botha fight (still near prime) lewis, mcbride, williams.no skills was his problem
Anyone who has seen the hype the likes of Canelo, Lacy, Stevens, Miranda, Golovkin, ect, get after stringing a few highlight reel KO's together should be able to grasp why an american heavyweight with the look and style of Tyson was able to capture the imaginations the way he did after the KO's he was getting. Fans are constantly looking for the next punchers hypetrain to jump on.... its easy to see why the boxing world loved tyson.
the botha fight still prime? You stupid idiot he was coming off a 2 year suspension and that was after 4 years in prison please log off and watch a different sport stupid ****
its in the book by Peter Heller, i always thought about typing that part up but never get round to it
If you didn't grow up in the Tyson era you will never understand the impact he had on the sport .Everything stopped when Tyson was fighting !
