Best trainers of all time?

Dundee was a good cornerman and motivator, not so good trainer (in Leonard's words). He stated that his main trainers were Dave Jacobs and Pepe Correa, and Dundee flew in the last week before a fight.

Training a fighter for one fight means nothing, building him up from the scratch does or working with a fighter for a long period of time.

Everyone mentioned pretty much belongs on the list, Steward, Arcel, Gore, Futch, Goldman, Cus'd Amato (possibly the most complete trainer in terms of physical AND mental preparation), Beristain and haven't seen Cuyo Hernandez mentioned.

 

and DOZENS of Great & unsung coaches & trainers who have filled the gyms and venues along the way with talented fighters a plenty.

Over his storied 50-year career, WhiteyBimstein was reputed as a great trainer and “cutman” for 25 World boxing champions, among them: Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Jake LaMotta, Barney Ross, Gene Tunney, Max Baer, James J. Braddock, Primo Carnera, Rocky Graziano, Mickey Walker, Jackie “Kid” Berg, Benny Leonard, Louis “Kid” Kaplan, Charley Phil *********, Ingemar Johansson and Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom. More than a dozen of his fighters
are in Boxing’s Hall of Fame.
Bimstein teamed with IJSHOF honoree Ray Arcel from 1925 to 1934, forming the most successful training combo in boxing history. After World War II Bimstein enjoyed a successful partnership with trainer Freddie Brown.
Whitey was known for his ability to motivate fighters both psychologically and physically, and was universally regarded
as a cornerman whose expertise with swabs, antiseptics and astringents between rounds was unsurpassed.
Bimstein was inducted into the International Boxing
Hall of Fame in 2006.
I doubt there has been a better ,more astute trainer than Futch.
Benny Georgino,Jackie McCoy,Harry Lenny,Eddie Thomas,Mannie Seaman . All clever men.

 

I believe Manny Steward's stature may well elevate to that consensus in time. Unlike others being mentioned on this thread, Manny developed his original champions from the ground up.

Gil Clancy also did this with Emile Griffith (from pugilistic cradle to pugilistic grave), and never let viewers of his CBS Sports Spectacular broadcasts with Tim Ryan forget it.

Eddie Futch is likely the consensus pick of most with a historic orientation, but I find myself increasingly interested in those who trained their charges from the very beginning into prominence.

Bring in the Petronelli brothers, because they tutored, trained and seconded Marvelous Marvin Hagler from beginning to end. However characteristically quiet and uninspired their oft criticized corner work for SRL was, that doesn't negate what Pat and Goody did for him in getting there.

 

William Sheriff's trainer Blummy "Gin Blossom" Mulstien invented the 1/2 Ham Shoulder Throw (legal under London Prize Rules) and the Twin Hock Doubling Punch (Mayweather pulled off a variation versus Hatton) among many other seminal advances in technique in the sport.

Too often overlooked.

 

Don't forget his work in pioneering modern conditioning. Sheriff took off when he stopped drinking cooking sherry between rounds.

Glad to see Jackie McCoy mentioned here. His body of work is awesome in itself. Made champions of Don Jordan, Raul Rojas, Mando Ramos, Rodolfo Gonzalez, Carlos Palomino and Gerrie Coetzee. Also started Carlos Hernandez to the jr. lightweight championship but I believe he jumped ship before winning it. McCoy also handled Frankie Crawford, Superfly Sandoval, Monroe Brooks and Andy Heilman.

 

He once conditioned Sheriff for a 45 round bout thru vigorous rubbing alone.

No trainer today could pull that off….

but to honest many of these trainers such as roach take
guys that are already world class and work with them

lets see him develop someone

ofcourse everyone will say pacman
but he took was already a world class fighter when roach took him on


and dundee, he was more of a motivator then a trainer
