One can only hope that some of them modern alphabet contenders reigns are eventually treated in the same way. Still, would it be fair to say that someone like Bruce Wood**** has achieved he same as much more heralded fighters like say, Razor Ruddock? Or that Lee Savold has better achievements than David Tua? He certainly has more titles, it seems.
Savold was good. He was a very smart fighter who fought in the old St. Paul style. He wasnt great but he could give a lot of guys problems and against certain styles he was hell. He didnt start getting a lot of recognition until he was past his prime. Watch his fight with Marciano when Marciano was on the way up and Savold was on the way down. He gives Marciano some problems and Ive often felt that had he been younger and in better shape he would have busted Marciano up badly. Maybe not won but he would have given him some scary moments due to their styles.
The style that Mike Gibbons pioneered. It was counter punching style typified by hands held low to draw leads, lean way back, then counter with accurate combos using footwork to create/close distance, and step around. it was a very conservative style that depended on accurate punching.

Savold did carry his left low against Louis he invited jabs and he got them,again and again.Liebling had seen both of Savold's fights against Al Hoosman in 1946 he based his opnionof Savold on those fights and the Louis one.Gibbons was scientific by all accounts, better than his bigger brother even ,[I haven't seen any of him,] I don't see much science in Savold.
He had Marciano climbing all over him. I think with more room Savold could have looked good. Everybody looked horrible against Rocky.
