Holmes is a much better fighter Foreman at his best was totally exposed, made to look amateur, awkward and slow and lost while suposebly fighting his fight at close quaters with Ali who isn't considered an inside fighter!

George landed a hell of a lot of body ahots while getting countered by Ali.
Noone else could have taken that punishment. As physical as it was Ali
beat him mentally, George has remarked and its debateable from watching
that George could have gotten up from the knockdown, but was beaten mentally. He threw everything he had at ALi, and Ali was still there taunting him as well. The George of that night bombs every other fighter out.
The rope a dope was not Ali's plan, thats just how good George was at cutting off the ring.:!:

I have to disagree with well regarded Michael Moorer. Wasn't he seen as one of the decades weakest champions? His chin was awful and hew as really a blown up light heavyweight. Look what Tua did to him. Foreman fought for 3 titles in his comeback and one against Moorer. Couldn't even beat Morrison who outboxed him. Larry is easily better than George.

I rank Holmes higher than Foreman overall.. But George had the better second career. No question about it.

Honestly, I guess he won the title, although some might argue beating Mercer as easily as he did compared to Foreman beating weak chinned Moorer is more impressive, although Moorer held the title. But that accomplishment was not as great as it seems . He won the title, but 3 chances at it. The power of Foreman obviously helped him in his second career, but Larry was more versatile and I think a greater fighter. My gut tells me Larry was greater. Larry would have beaten Frazier, and he beat Norton.. So. Both beat Cooney, although different times.

I copied and pasted this from a thread that I started back in 2009 on this subject. For the record, I rate Holmes higher overall as previously stated. But I have always felt Foreman had the better comeback... Here's why...

    FOREMAN'S BEST WINS IN COMEBACK:

    1. Michael Moorer - 35-0, lineal heavyweight champion
    2. Lou Savarese - 36-0, USBA heavyweight champion
    3. Adilson Rodriguez - 36-2, Brazilian heavyweight champion
    4. Alex Stewart - 28-3, fringe contender
    5. Pierre Coetzer - 39-4,Fringe contender
    6. Crawford Grimsley - 20-0 prospect
    7. Jimmy Ellis - 17-0 prospect
    8. Bert Cooper - 20-4 Journeyman.
    9. Axel Schultz - 21-1, contender ( okay, Schultz got robbed )
    10. Gerry Cooney - 28-2, faded veteran.

    FOREMANS LOSSES:

    1. Evander Holyfield
    2. Tommy Morrison
    3. SHannon Briggs - possible robbery

LARRY HOLMES BEST WINS IN COMEBACK

    1. Ray Mercer - 18-0, Solid Contender
    2. Jessie Ferguson - 20-12, past prime journeyman.
    3. Jose Ribalta - 33-9-1, past prime journeyman.
    4. Mike Weaver - 41-17-1, faded veteran
    5. James Smith - 44-16-1, faded veteran
    6. Butterbean Esche - 65-2-3, make of him what you will
    7. Paul Poirer - 29-2, journeyman
    8. Michael Greer - 42-11, past prime journeyman
    9. Ken Lakusta - 21-19-1, tomato can
    10. Quin Navarre- 17-3-1, journeyman.

    LARRY HOLMES LOSSES IN COMEBACK:

    1. Evander Holyfield
    2. Brian Nelson
    3. Oliver McCall

ANALYSIS: In the loss department, I'd say these guys are basically tied. No real difference there, and even if there is, its marginal at best. From there on out however its not even close. George Foreman had a comeback record of 31-3-26, while Holmes' second career consisted of 21-3-10. Additionally, their competition weighs heavily in favor of Foreman. Foreman's best comeback win was his KO of Michael Moorer - a 35-0 lineal champion who had just taken the title from Evander Holyfield, making Foreman the oldest man to ever regain the lineal crown. Holme's best victory was his decision over Ray Mercer - an 18-0 prospect who's best win was over Tommy Morrison. Clearly Foreman takes the cake in terms of single best win. As we go further down the line to second tier opponents, it gets rather ugly. Foreman fought a fair number of undefeated prospects, fringe contenders and respectable journeyman who's ages ranged anywhere from late 20's to perhaps early 30's, and who had fairly respectable records. Larry Holmes was fighting 40+ year old former champs, ex-contenders and journeyman who sometimes even crossed into the realm of tomato can.. Now, you could say that Foreman received a gift in the Schultz fight, but then most ( including myself ) felt that he was robbed in the Shannon Briggs match. If we want we can mix and match by counting his fight with Schultz a loss while giving him the nod for Briggs, and frankly I think he actually comes out better. But, that of course is up to the individual. Once again, Foreman's comeback made history by shocking the boxing world to regain the heavweight title 20 years after his first reign. Larry Holmes failed on all three of his attempts to win back a strap, including against two of the worst alpha titists of all time in Brian Nelson and Oliver McCall........

CONCLUSION : Some might make a valid argument that Larry Holmes was a tad more deserving of his title shot at Evander Holyfield than Foreman was by virtue of his win over Mercer. That's fine, but if we're talking about who had the better comeback run overall, the award goes to George Foreman and its not even close.

    1. Foreman had the better comeback record
    2. Foreman finished his comeback with wins over better opponents
    3. Foreman regained the heavyweight title, while Holmes didn't

Under LARRY HOLMES BEST WINS...replace 9. Ken Lakusta - 21-19-1, tomato can with Maurice Harris - 19-8-1, journeyman (okay, Harris got robbed).

I like George better as a person.
Larry as a boxer was amazing but as a person he seemed like a whiny little turd
    but that's just me.

I have to give George the edge here...with no disrespect to Holmes....maybe I'm just biased, because there were indeed things that Larry did better than George, as in all the things mentioned already,...but like I said, mabe I'm just biased for Foreman....he had an incredible career...as in reinventing himself and winning back the heavyweight title....that alone speaks volumes for him.

Ok, foreman.. FOREMAN WON THE OLIMPIC GOLD MEDAL, LARRY NEVER DID ,A guy who destroyed a 29 years old undefeated joe frazier( some stupid guys are trying to insinuate that frazier was in bad shape or he was shot etc it is a total bull**** ... Foreman would have destroyed every version of frazier as easily), ken norton in his absolute peak did beat ali twice and foreman destroyed him like a rag doll in 2 rounds and he was flying on the ring, foreman faced guys like ron lyle (lyle was a nightmare for holmes stylistically and he gave to the peanut hard sparring sessions so holmes wanted no part of lyle in a real fight), foreman knocked lyle out, foreman stopped george chuvalo(far a bigger name than bums like occasio, lorenzo zanon, alfredo evangelista etc). Foreman faced jimmy young and larry holmes never did. Foreman destroyed gerry cooney in 2 rounds, foreman did return to the boxing after being 10 years retired, and then he won the title by knock out (yes blablabla michael moorer was winning on points blsablabla, foreman won by ko, period and he was in his 40s.
Larry holmes defended his title long time because he diD not have a 74 muhammad ali in his way, he did not have joe frazieR in his way(the same frazier who broken 2 ribs to larry in sparring sessions when frazier was past his prime and larry left the ring like a *****), he fought a war vs a welL past prime norton, i am sure that a peak 74 norton would have won the fight. Can you imagine foreman having any problem defending his title vs these guys ? Ossie occasio, lorenzo zanon, trevor berbick, alfredo evangelista, marvis frazier, leroy jones, scott ledoux(foreman kicked his ass in 3), earnie shavers, mike weaver, gerry cooney(foreman killed him in 2), reinaldo snipes, tex coob, james smith, scott frank, david bey? The only guy who would havee been a decent oponent would have been tim witherspoon (the same witherspoon who gave the hell to larry and many people could think that tim actually won the fight, and holmes wanted no part of the rematch), larry holmes haD more defences because he faced crappy oposition in his prime.. Simple like that..

So you rate a prime 1988 Tyson on par with a come backing Foreman was an opponent for Holmes, as they both had big right hands ? Did it matter that one moved at light speed and the other pony express ? Foreman achieved a lot in his comeback but by fate he was oh so lucky he never fought Tyson because he would likely not lasted a round and his legacy would be severely tarnished.

AS far as head to head Holmes was clearly the better fighter and had the style to defeat Foreman as George never defeated a boxer of that class in his entire career. Bad match up for George.

Holmes, not close with his 26 world title fights, 22-4 in title fights against all styles. He probably has faced 3 times the number of rated opponents that Foreman did.

You could include Holmes comeback against Spinks and Tyson, he was nearly 37 against Tyson, the age when Foreman started his comeback. When he started his next comeback he was 40, 42 against Mercer and was a few months from his 43rd birthday against Holmes. 44 against McCall in a close contest.
