I think free agent status works when you have a "name" like Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao, ODLH... Not too many fighters will get far as a free agent.

Why would GBP, TR, Duva, Maun events invest loads of money in branding a fighter when he has no obligation to stay loyal to the promotioanl company branding the fighter.

Not all fighters are Golden like Oscar, and Lomanchenko who come into the game with a nice size following.

In the end I see the lesser known fighters to the mainstream fans getting screwed if they stay without a promotional machine promoting their NAME.

Isn't Floyd Mayweather the biggest PPV attraction in boxing? Hasn't Golden Boy promoted his last 7-8 fights? Didn't Schaefer maintain a good working relationship with Mayweather who fought Golden Boy fighters exclusively?
