    Both in their prime
also in 1971 they were supposed to fight but Liston's death prevented this. so my questions are who would've won in their primes, and who would've won had they faced in 1971 if Liston hadn't died.

In their Primes i think the Liston Jab is the winner for Sonny, he was big enough and strong enough not to get Bullied around by George, and Sonny could be a relaxed stalker in the Ring so a distance fight would not present a problem...perhaps with a fair few clinches along the way, but when the ref parts them...i think i know what punch is thrown...and who's the recepient. if George had a down the wire with Bonavena...Sonny is the firm pick

in 72 Sonny was a hollow Husk...george is the pick and perhaps fairly quick.

Which means nothing, a 71 Sonny, geez o pete!
Prime Sonny (whatever year you want to agree on) vs. Prime Chuvalo is a mismatch, plain and simple. Feel free to weigh in with some lame logic that would suggest that Chuvalo would 'weather the storm' and get to 'em in the late rounds.

Total mismatch. Sonny's jab would bust Chuvalo's face up like a ripe tomato. Im comfortable picking Sonny by mid to late round TKO.

People picking a dead Sonny Liston over Chuvalo are underestimating the Canadian. Guy was undefeated against the living dead.

Does it or does it not stipulate prime for prime. in that case, yes, its a total mismatch.

I believe the post is asking the results of in their primes and then in '71 had Liston not passed. In their primes - a total mismatch with Sonny winning in a beatdown, in '71 George walks through a still formidable Liston jab to club his way to a late round stoppage.

I still dont think Chuvalo beats a 71 Liston. Chuvalo wasnt a whole lot better than Chuck Wepner and Liston did a job on Wepner. Class tells and Liston at every stage was a class above Chuvalo. Remember, in 71 Chuvalo wasnt exactly in his prime and this version of Chuvalo who supposedly walks through the Liston jab got his ass handed to him and bullied and beat up Jimmy Ellis. Watch the last round of the Ellis fight where he has Chuvalo in a corner covering up and getting the tar kicked out of him. Id have to think the much harder hitting, stronger, and more intimidating Liston (even at that point) would punish Chuvalo enough to gain his respect, send him into his shell, and win on points.

Chuvalo knocks out Liston. Liston wouldn't last.

Liston turns Chuvalo's face into ground beef but the Canadian strongman stays erect.

Eventually, this fight would be stopped as George's eyes are mere slits and he's badly cut.
