He has been found wanting in his last 3 all against world class opposition, a division up from where he started. Let's not forget he was durable enough to go the course in all 3 showing grit, toughness and stamina at the highest level unlike many other British contenders like Bellew, Purdy, Rose etc. Don't forget he beat Martinez, Katsidas, Mitchell, Gonzalez.
He maxed out on the talent he had.hope he retires now and doesn't become a stepping stone for domestic fighter's that couldn't lace his gloves in his prime.
He's still the number one lightweight in Britain as far as I concerned. I have seen a post saying Crolla has bigger fish to fry. Give me a break he drew with Derry Matthews not too long ago. I hardly think a win over Rees now makes Crolla too big for him. If Crolla makes thestep up to the level Burns has been fighting at he could easily end up suffering a similar type of defeat to what Rose did recently. Burns came on strongly at the end against Crawford who has just beaten Gamboa. In my opinion Burns should go back to Billy Nelson either that or go to Freddie Roach.
Burns deserves credit to go from losing against Arthur and Johansen to becoming a 2 weight world champion deserves a lot of credit I hope he either retires now or takes a few fights to get his confidence back up he needs to fight guys who don't have big power.
A two weight world champion like Ricky Burns would most likely get the attention of Roach. Not liķe he is some novice or journeyman.
He deserves credit, but it's over for him now losing 3 in a row after getting lucky in the fight before that. he might still make some domestic waves but he's done at world level.
Burns has had a lot of tough fights close together. I know he had to take the Crawford mandatory but I wonder was getting in with Crawford a good move. It's hard to keeping performing against top quality opposition. I think the strategy Matchroom used with Burns didn't help him.
this is doubly wrong. firstly, what do you expect a world champion to do? fight losers in the way the K bros or Calzaghe does? appalling. every opponent should be a legit challenger, that is, world level, perhaps with 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 stepped down a level. secondly, his opponents aren't even the best ones he could pick, they are largely second rate. and to add to that, burns never performed against them anyway. Hes arguably lost 4 on the trot now, and certainly 3. The evidence dictates that he shouldn't be at world level, though I am of course not saying he shouldn't be trying to capture a title - just that he didn't deserve to own one in the firstplace. The best thing he had going for him, heart, is no longer there either, and without that hes euro level. Though I do hope he can develop and get to that world level one day.
I feel he isn't nearly the fighter he was, still got the heart of a lion and will to see the fight out but he has become too easy to hit and isn't judging distances any more. its a shame as there is a few decent fighters up here that deserve good exposure but I feel the big boxing nights wont be back here for a while now
Agree with both points. Burns for me is 100% the best LW we have here in the UK. Come up short in his recent outings at world level, but still has to much for the domestic lads. I would like to see + imagine that he will drop down a level now, so we will see some domestic dust ups involving Burns (going off the basis of Hearns recent interview with Kugan) which I do think we'll see him shine once more in.
