Definition: When is a champion "undisputed"

the WBA shouldn't be talkiing about unified or undisputed champions with their multiple Interm, World, Super and other joke titles

 

And yet the WBA hands out multiple "world title" belts of their own in a single division, even when they consider a champ undisputed. Just look at the Chagaev vs Oquendo fight for their bogus Regular Bowel Movement belt.

I still think the undisputed mark should only be given to the holder of all major belts IF he's also the linear champ.
And I also am a strong supporter of when a belt gets vacant a multiple beltholder should get the chance to fight for that vacant belt in his next bout against the #1 of that organisation to make it easier to create real champions in the divisions and preventing milking of vacant belts.

 

Yeah, this ^. They've been in discussions with the WBC and IBF regarding working together to get unified champs, but the WBO hasn't been invited to the party.

Pretty much BS really IMO as the WBO has a decent set of titlists, and as pointed out, the proliferation of WBA straps is itself a joke.

I mean in principle I like the idea of fewer recognised belts and a push to unify, but I don't like the idea of simply taking guys like Crawford, Kovalev, Rigo, Loma, Huck, Andrade, Pac, Mikey Garcia (hell, even Abraham and Quillin) out of the running - which this would effectively do.

I wouldn't consider a WBC / WBA / IBF unified champ exactly 'undisputed' with a talent pool like that willing and ready to dispute it.

Curiously, though probably co-incidentally, there's a preponderance of HBO and TR fighters on the list of WBO titlists which may impact on how things play out, especially if there is any truth to rumours of SHOs financial troubles.

 

I think undisputed has to do with recognition

There's a bunch of belt holders but at most weights any reasonable observer can determine who the best is even without unification

 

That's the actual definition of the consensus champion.

 

A better question is who is the best boxer in each weight division.

 

Luckily this is all changing as the WBA, WBC, and IBF are going to join together to create a unified champion by 2016, whereby the beltholders will engage in a tournament to decide legit champion.

 

And when the networks refuse to pay thier titlists their fees, or threaten to sue for breach of contract......how then do these tournaments get put together.

I remember the whole S6, when Lucian Bute was the concensus Champion at 168. HBO had him under contract, which he promptly fulfilled to sign with Showtime. Showtime spent 2 mil/fight(and owe him a fight) only to have Dan G005EN boycott his entry as an alternate and instead letting 42 y/o Glen Johnson in instead.

Now, Showtime is trying to do a LHW tourney, which will allow WARD in, since he's suing to get off HBO, and not allow the best LHW, KOvalev in.:rofl:rofl:rofl

I remember him ducking the S6, hiding in Canada and getting brutally exposed when he finally stepped up to elite level. Only Butards ever had him as a "consensus" champion....champion of the Bell Centre.
