Ever wondered where Earnie Shavers power came from?

Anybody else think that Shavers looks a little like a larger version of Marvin Hagler or Bennie Briscoe sometimes? I can't lay my finger on what it is exactly. Is it the build, the shaved head, the trunks, or what? All of 'em are pretty good at throwing shots, maybe it's the way they commit to punches?

 

Yes he did, and for all of the reasons you mentioned.

Sad that a fighter like Earnie had to earn a living by working on the doors at nightclubs over here in the U.K.

 

Earnie Shavers is never considered much more than a B level fighter with big power but even then I consider him one of the most overrated fighters/punchers ever. I know, I know, a lot of guys jumped on the bandwagon and said he hit them the hardest but the guy never knocked out a top in his prime. Indeed whenever he fought a contender level fighter near his prime he was either beaten or at least taken into very deep water and some of those guys to do it were naturally smaller guys. Another one of Dean Chances hype jobs. Im going to get jumped all over for saying this but its what I believe. The guy was only modestly skilled, had no stamina, had a mediocre set of whiskers, and yes he could punch but I dont reckon he was near the hardest puncher.

 

When ever he threw a punch he put his whole body into it and rotated very well from the hips - a fundamental which even some of the best fighters often execute poorly. At to it that he had a lot of strength when employing proper punching technique and that's a lethal combination.

 

I agree with a good portion of your post, but I have to credit him as being a legitimately ranked all time hard hitter. Not saying that he's undisputed #1, but that overhand right earned its reputation.

 

In all fairness, whilst it certainly isn't a glamorous job, he seems to be doing ok regardless. Plus people in Liverpool really respect him.

 

And so they should but I bet there's the occasional big head who's looking for trouble, better be able to duck though or they'd be in serious trouble.

 

I actually agree with everything including him being the hardest puncher ever. He just went out and shot his wad half the time, overcommitting to his power shots, believing his own press. Sure, he hit very, very hard but he was not what I would label a truly elite powerpunching performer in that he never stopped an elite fighter.

 

I agree almost verbatim and I was a fan from the early days.

Shavers caught Holmes with a punch that would have knocked out a lot guys

But anyone with a good chin would take it

When Holmes got up he was out, if shavers wasn'twasn't in his 50s and completely physical ly drained he would have finished him
