so "no available film footage" is an indication a fight is not on the level?

A lot of non-championship fights were not filmed. There are all kinds of well known fighters I have not seen film footage of. Elmer Ray anyone?

This all assumes the fight wasn't filmed. Does anyone know that for certain? Perhaps a film will still surface. It happens. Or the film simply decomposed and was lost. Has anyone seen film of Valdes-Charles?

I'm not criticizing the "Valdes won" point of view as much as the one implying a conspiracy.

It just goes over the edge for me.

There is absolutely no equivalence between the two.

Holmes was giving up titles he already had, in order not to fight certain challengers.

That gives you a much stronger case for establishing avoidance.

Not taking sides here and nor do I devalue Rocky's legacy for not fighting Valdez.. But the man who Holmes dumped his title to avoid facing was not ranked for as long as Nino was, or at least I'm pretty sure. Just mentioning it.

    HEGrant,

Had Marciano fought and beaten Valdes, where would Valdes rank on Marcianos list of best opponents in your opinion?

I mostly see plagiarism from books. Never saw much original thoughts from the man, outside of odd picks like Haye over Wlad.

The case against Holmes is not unambiguous by any means, but it is a lot stronger than that against Marciano.

Whatever the merits of Page as a title challenger, and whatever the flaws of the WBC as a sanctioning body, it was a pretty drastic step to surrender the title to him.

Obviously it would not be fair to ask Holmes to meet the same standards as Marciano, over his much longer title reign.

Only in that he was held accountable.

A great deal of it had to do with Jose Sulaman being in Don King's back pocket and Holmes parting ways with him to go independent. There is probably more to it than that, but I ( and others ) feel that the relationship or ending thereof played a role.

    Fair enough.

This is a matter of styles and size .. no one rates Valdez better than a Charles or a Walcott or a Moore all time but it would have been interesting to see the 5' 10", 187 pound fighter w the 67" reach who excelled w superior strength, conditioning and power matched up against bigger, stronger, younger opposition opposed to the smaller, older, talented but shopworn names he carved his legend against ... just the facts.
