Are you saying that Vitali was lineal champion? Because that's not something we'd agree with.

Wladimir is the first lineal champ since Lewis.

No, I am saying Vitali had a claim to the #1 contender, or at worst #2 before his retirement. And with Wlad holding the other spot, post Lewis retirement the #1 and #2 contenders have yet to meet for the vacant crown according to lineage.

I'll slip him in behind McVey, I think.

Vitali was inactive for a year, and as such was unranked at the time of the Povetkin-Wladimir fight. It's true that this is a contentious point but fortunately it was validated completely by Vitali's never fighting again.

Here we disagree; they met last year.

No. I, like most boxing fans including I suspect you; consider Wlad now as the 'generally recognized' Heavyweight Champion of the World, but linear is something different.

Linear has traditions, rules and quirks to it. It is why Tyson was not champ for a period, despite being the best. It was why Foreman could go through a golden period of the division in the 90s claiming the title, going life and death with journeymen. And it is why as good as Wlad is, he has not done what is required to be considered linear champ.

No, that's not what I mean. I mean that Wladimir is the lineal heavyweight King having defeated the #2 contender whilst ranked as the #1 contender.

    6. The Transnational Boxing Rankings Board Championship Policy
    I. When a champion retires or vacates the championship, the first-ranked contender must fight the second-ranked contender to fill the vacancy. Lesser contenders do not constitute the best, and the fact that they are allowed to compete for vacant championships by other organizations does not make them so. The gravitas of the true championship will be vitiated no longer. Therefore, no allowances for third, fourth, and fifth-ranked contenders will be made.

Contendership is not recognised in perpetuity, by anyone. One year is a perfectly reasonable cut-off. That's been enforced here. Vitali was not retired, but nor was he ranked.

I am very happy that the tbrb consider Wlad champ, I agree, but linear's rules are such, it does not...

But that's a matter of opinion. YOUR opinion is that Vitali should remain ranked, apparently regardless of inactivity, or on your own personal timetable for inactivity, and we believe that a year is enough for a fighter to be withdrawn from the rankings (if he doesn't have a fight scheduled).

Wladimir beat his #2 contender when ranked #1; he's Champ.

My opinion is Wlad, but linear has rules; it is why if the Queen (LIZII) died tomorrow, Charles would become King, despite William and indeed George being far more popular. That is why it is called linear, it takes opinion out the equation.

If opinion is taken out of the equation, what circumstances greet the crowning of a new King?

As the sport does not have a legislature, it needs to use precedents from the past to create a lineage.
