Rank him in what? Top Canadian Boxers? Top Boxers to fight Mickey Ward?

Gatti's my favorite of all-time (fighters, to clarify) but he doesn't belong on an ATG list.

As a boxer, Gatti was a great entertainer.

    No way..

    All time great? no

But to call him a bum is just as much of an exaggeration.

I presume you are calling him a bum because Floyd beat him.:yep

When famous people die too young, fans tend to try to deify them, but if they live they are quickly forgotten once their 15 minutes are up.
Had Cobain lived he would be Eddie Vedder, fringe artist no one cares about.
Had Ledger lived he'd be Jake Gyllenhaal struggling to find a relevant role.
Had Hendrix lived he'd be playing sad oldie music festivals.
Had Joplin lived she'd be Grace Slick, irrelevant eccentric weirdo.

Same thing has happened with Gatti he was very entertaining fun fighter with some skills, but he has been romanticized far to much and turned into an icon, whose posthumous hype far outweighs his actual accomplishments. Had Gatti lived he'd be forgotten the same way Mickey Ward has in spite of having a movie made about him.
That being said they both gave us a great trilogy, although Berto/Ortiz and Matthysse/Molina could be capable of the same thing if they were given the chance.

Can you imagine if Jim Morrison was still alive?

He would be just some drunk, old, hairy fat man.. Whose voice has gone too far he can barely even speak, let alone go on The Doors reunion tours once a decade.:rofl

He was not a great fighter, yet he had a great heart and he was in great fights, so in that he was in great fights, he was a great personality. Good enough to be in the Hall of Fame?. In someways I am glad they put him in the HOF, but at the same time maybe he should have gone in another category than fighter. There were other guys who did not get in who should have over Gatti on skill and titles and who they beat.

If you forget about all the hyperbole that some people say (which I feel causes some of the backlash), and just look at boxing as a whole, he was a good fighter who had a good career. Titles at 130 and 140, even though the 140 lb. one was less "legit" than most (he beat Branco for the vacant belt). 99% of fighters never win a world title.

1 thing I often hear is that Gatti was an "overachiever" due to his heart and toughness. Maybe that is true money-wise, but he was more talented and athletic than often given credit for. Particularly in his younger years, he had pretty good legs and speed of foot and hand. He could box, he boxed well in his title win over Patterson.

He was wild outside the ring and drank & partied heavily when in training camp. He was even drinking alcohol at a press conference to promote one of his fights, he put wine in a cup and people thought it was water.

You could say he was underachieving due to his poor training/lifestyle habits. He went 0-3 in 1998. He lost to Ivan Robinson in the first fight by the slimmest of margins, and was fighting on even terms with Angel Manfredy despite getting badly cut early on. Cutting weight too-fast has been said to make it more likely to swell up and possibly cut easier.
