A sympathy/pity round is one you give to a fighter for doing better work than he has done in previous rounds, even though the other fighter probably deserved it.

Usually pity rounds do nothing to change the result of the fight since the other guy is so in charge.

On example I'm thinking of is Hamed-Barrera. Some people had that fight wide, 10-2, 9-3. Others had it something like 7-5. Perhaps they gave Hamed too many pity rounds?

I think networks do this sometimes to make the fight seem closer than it really is and give the impression that it's a good fight rather than a mismatch.

    Nope.

The closest thing I can imagine is what i'd call the 'trade-off draw round'. Where if the round is nearly impossible to score between each fighter then you just give one of two close rounds to each fighter instead of giving the draw round which is rarely given. Couple of them in the various Pacquiao Marquez fights where it's hard to give either fighter a round definitively.

    e.g

Round 1 - Too close to call i'll give it to Marquez (take mental note for presumed another upcoming draw/close round)
Round 2 - Yet again Too close to call, since I gave the last one to Marquez i'll give this one to Pacquiao

    Fights even.

I'm sure TV commentators are guilty of scoring fights closer than they really are in the hope people watching at home won't turn off because one fighter looks so far ahead the fight is probably over.

Make up rounds definitely exist. They are a natural consequence of the flawed 10 point must system. A round that is even must be scored to one fighter. The next even or close round is often then given to the other fighter because the scorer thinks, "well, this fight is close so the score should look close too".

That is absolutely ****ing ridiculous, literally the worst method you could possibly use. Thank really hard and decide who deserves the round on meritorious grounds and if you can't for the life of you split them just suck it up and give the drawn round 10-10.

There is no limit on how many close rounds before one guy is "due" to be given one. You can have a 120-108 where all twelve rounds are insanely close but edged by one guy.

    That's unbelievably ******ed.

Each round exists in a vacuum, why is that so hard for some people?

When scoring a round you should never be thinking of anything but what transpired in those exact three minutes, and should not attempt to place them in larger context.

What happens when one fighter gets, for example, 3 even rounds but the other only gets 2 even rounds?

    It's not fair.

Yes it does. When one fighter pretty much schools the other, in the round the schooling was not as intense as it had been in the previous rounds, we tend to give the other boxer the round for trying.....

Not if you're scoring the fight correctly.

He asked if they exist. Not if they should exist. If you look at my answer, you'll see that I say they should not exist, but are a natural consequence of the 10-point must system, where judges are told not to score even rounds. Many times on this board I have been all alone in saying that an even round should be scored even, and people respond to me, "Just grow a pair and pick someone."
