Is Boxing Declining Because Of MMA?

I have to believe that one of the deciding factors for Boxing's decline in the U.S. is the alphabet soup of organizations that are given equal footing with one another by the media and the general public. This is what creates the current situation we have now of 3 to 5 heavyweight champions and what little talent is out there being spread too thin. Since there are multiple organizations, champions have a lot more leeway in avoiding competition from other organizations without much criticism.

What we need is an NFL, NHL, or FIFA of boxing. One or two organizations which are looked at as being the top of the sport. This way talent if gradually siphoned into said orgs. and the top fighters would be pressured to fight other top fighters. This is one of the positives that the UFC has going for it as there is only one UFC heavyweight champion, one middleweight champion, ect. More often than not, in the UFC we see the fights we want to see; if Pacman and Mayweather were MMA fighters fighting under the UFC banner they would have already fought five years ago.

 

As a hardcore boxing fan for over three decades & a rabid MMA fan since UFC 1 in ‘93, I’ve sort of seen it all. And these anti-UFC/MMA editorials from the boxing establishment are nothing new.

I have boxing magazines from the ’70s upstairs in my collectibles room that have editorials lambasting full contact karate & being too brutal for the public at large. And, while it’s quite true that full contact karate/kickboxing never really got big in this hemisphere like MMA has, I see no reason at all why both boxing & MMA can’t both thrive worldwide.

Yeah, boxing has copious amounts of problems, but many of them are the same problems that it’s had since I became a fan at 14 years old in 1976. And here we are some 32 years later & it’s still a major sport, so I’m not too worried.

I’m sure that back when pro football first got huge in the ’60s, the baseball purists were pissed, but they learned to get used to it & probably eventually became fans themselves.

boxing is not declining because of mma.

boxing is not declining because it has too many champions.....boxing is declining because in the average sports fan view boxing has no champions any more.

if you have different belt holders in different weights..you can understand casual fans not knowing who the champion is.

you need champions.

why is the biggest viewing event in snooker the world championship ?.....why is being the premierships champion in football so important ?

you need champions...boxing has effectively hidden its champions from view.....you are left with a sport relying on hard core fans to support it.

Yeah, no kidding, you couldn't pay me to watch that UFC crap either. It's entertaining sometimes when they actually stand up and throw some punches, but there is way too much of the BORING rolling around on the ground ****. Watching paint dry is more entertaining than that!
