Looking for suggestions on Classic Boxing Books

A.J. Liebling was probably the most talented boxing writer ever. The man could actually write, unlike the Bert Sugars of the world.

 

Both those book are classics too. And any ferdie pachecho book too!!

 

Ferdie Pacheco??? Blegh. One of the most self serving, asinine, know nothing men to ever be considered a boxing "expert."

 

The Kostya Tszyu bio Something Worth Fighting For by Paul Upham is worth a read.

I am looking to buy a book on-line and want to know if anyone has read and could recommend any of the following:

Sporting Scandals Vol 11 (Great boxing scandals) - Emeline Fort.

Come Out Swinging (The changing world of Gleason's Gym) - Lucua Timbur.

The Road To Nowhere (A journey through boxing's wastelands) - Tris Dixon.

Al Bernstein (30 years 30 untenable truths) - Al Bernstein.

On Boxing - Joyce Carol Oates.

Third Man in the Ring (33 of boxing's best referees & their stories) - Mike Fitzgerald.

Are you able to offer an opinion on any of the books I have listed above?

 

I liked On Boxing by Joyce Carol Oates but it is more literary and deep-thinking than most of the genre.

I like Al Bernstein period ... met him years ago and he's just a genuine good guy IMO, so I'm sure I'd like his book.

 

I have read so many times Joyce Carol Oates' book is quite something. But never got around to chasing up a copy. Like you I've been a Bernstein fan and will probably buy that one.

A couple of the others in the list also caught my fancy. Figure I'll buy the Bernstein book and one of the others for now. Perhaps either The Road To Nowhere or Third Man in the Ring.

 

Night train by Nick Tosche is decent. Hard going at some points but worth reading. The one thread stealer mentioned,dark trade is a very good read,enjoyed that one and it`s easier going than night train.

 

if your interested in the time period i suggest Jacobs Garden, about mike jacobs, MSG, the fighters who fought there and the mob, from the 30s til the late 50s. Very good read i found

 

Black Ajax by George Macdonald Fraser.

It's a fictionalized account of the life of the bareknuckle fighter Tom Molineux. It's written from multiple accounts and has all the attention to period detail, humour and outright brilliant yarn telling that were the hallmarks of this great writer.

 

Saw this one while I was searching around and very nearly added it to my list. Noted for the future :good

 

my current reading: Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring by Teddy Atlas
