Boxing is personally more exciting for me but I've watched MMA fans display just the opposite. The first time I got really excited was watching Silva get KO'd by Weidman because it was unexpected, right? I mean Silva was supposed to have the advantage standing.

If martial arts are older it's because they played a role in ancient warfare and how long have people been warring for? Maybe longer than they've been engaging in sport.

I respect the athletes and I respect what they do. It'a technical sport and any combat sport is tough. So yeah, respect.

Personally though, I'm not really into the ground game too much. It's not that I don't understand what's going on, but I just don't find the ground game that interesting.

I watch it sometimes, but I prefer boxing. Some MMA is good to watch though.

MMA and grappling is as scientific as it gets. wtf u on about cuz? I'm a fan of striking myself but you'd have to be blind to not notice to subtle body twisting, getting into positions, using leverage to try out grapple your opponent. You think its just hurr durr I'm stronger than you, pick you up, put you down, gnp. lol.

False. All the MMA fans I use to work with would rag on me for liking boxing. I would just tell them to call me when the king of MMA could sniff the money that king's in boxing make. That usually shut them up.

Wtf you talking about. Boxing has been around 1000s of years. Probably as long if not longer than the various forms which make up modern MMA.

Big Fedor fan here. Showed what can be done in MMA with striking skill, chin and takedown defense. For those who hate MMA please watch Fedor vs Kevin Randleman and tell me that is boring. It's a young sport and no doubt in the coming decades you will see more rounded skilled fighters. Hell even now you have a fighter like Jon Jones who is highly skilled.

Because it's a sport for white trash….MMA is pure garbage. They can't throw a proper punch, their grappling is boring and involves no skill or tactic besides wrapping legs around a guy like a disgusting homo.

I recall people hating on mma on my old site. At the time I believe they feared mma, so I told them there was nothing to worry about, as the more popular mma got the more popular boxing would become. This happened for quite awhile, but now mma is falling off in comparison. What I see happened is that as the fighters learned more they became more afraid to engage with so many way to lose. It seems now there you can hardly find a balanced action fight, it's either quick ko, submission, or 3-5 rds. of posturing. What made mma appealing is the same thing making it unappealing.

I don't know if that is true. I know that they say it a lot but the mma world is more fractured than boxing ever was. UFC guys don't fight Bellator guys who don't fight World Series of Fighting guys who don't fight One FC guys. Back when it was mostly just the UFC and Pride lots of big fights never got made, and even when both fighters were under the UFC sometimes fights weren't getting made. Part of the problem is that the UFC will just put someone up in a title shot and say he's one of the best, but there really is no international body ranking or officiating anything. There may be someone awesome in China or Russia that nobody even knows about because the sport is largely a regional affair just between America and Brazil.

I also think it's important to note that boxing has roughly 17,500 professional fighters and mma has roughly 2,400 professional fighters. That means there's probably about 7 or 8 times as many world class fighters in boxing as there are in mma, so the odds that you going to see a high level fight or the best fighting the best is several times greater. Part of the reason why mma fighters boxing is so sloppy and they look amateurish, is because often they are. The quality of fighter which regularly makes it onto a UFC card wouldn't make it onto an HBO or a Showtime card. They would be left with other journeymen fighters on ESPN.

I've also noticed that some of the big money fighters look like they have had favorable match ups and are somewhat protected. Either they don't fight the number one ranked opponent beneath them or they will fight a guy who they have stylistic advantages over and who is custom made for them. And then sometimes when two of the best guys fight each other in mma, say two guys who are elite at wrestling, but they decide to box because each feels he might have an advantage but neither is a master. Or you have two strikers who choose to grapple even though they aren't very good at that. You don't get that in boxing because both guys know they have to box, and that's what they trained for.

One other thing about the best fighting the best in mma. I've heard a lot of lame fighters get hyped up in mma over the years and then seen them end their careers with as many losses as victories. BJ Penn, Nick Diaz, Tito Ortiz, Kevin Randleman, etc. There seems to be a lot of hype in mma where you can just pretend people are great no matter what their record is and if they lose a lot you can just claim that's because the best fight the best in mma. Chael Sonnen talks his way into a title shot with Anderson Silva, loses, goes up twenty pounds to another title shot against Jon Jones, loses. Is that what they mean when they say that the best fight the best?

Examples of big fights in mma that didn't happen:

    Anderson Silva vs Jon Jones
Anderson Silva vs George St Pierre
    Anderson Silva vs Lyoto Machida
    Brock Lesnar vs. Fedor Emelianenko
    Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman
    Randy Couture vs. Rich Franklin
    Randy Couture vs Fedor Emelianenko
    Fedor Emelianenko vs Alistair Overeem
Mirko Cro Cop vs Randy Couture
    Urijah Faber vs KID Yamamoto
    Gilbert Melendez vs Eddie Alvarez

The sport is still pretty young and I probably didn't even think of several others since I'm not a huge knowledgeable mma fan.
