Well he was not a shot fighter. But go watch his previous bout against David Bey. That was the guy fighting Tyson. He had no chance and very few people were picking him to win. Ironically most of the folks liking his chances had not seen the Bey effort. But they were guilty of buying into the "heavyweight potential" thing. Man, is that ever a horrible guage for the heavyweight division or what? How often did the potentail guy really look terrific when he finally moved up and faced elite competition? Biggs held those hands too low. He punched and brought them back low. Then, he lifted them up. He held that chin straight up in the air and rarely moved his head. Those are fatal flaws against a Tyson type of combo puncher. But the Duva camp cashed in when they had a chance. Based on that Bey fight, they had to. His form was not good after that initial promise from say the first 2 years of his career. He'd peaked. They were kind of in Cooney land, if you will. Meaning a new diet of top 10 heavies and that caliber of competition was going to lead to a loss. For not big money and it would not take a champ to do it. So it was a case of selling stock when the price was high, not low. Main Events did a wonderful job of timing and getting a big payday.
Do some research on the man it's there to be found, I'm sure years of drug and drink abuse does no harm to the body and mind.
Wass 1985? "Do some research on the man"? Ha ha...u obviously havent read many of my past posts on this guy.I know his life backwards.
Azzer.. Tyrell said "u throwin elbows today Mike" Tyson didnt reply..watch the video. I have a philadelphia radio station recording of the fight...the guy was sat near Biggs corner. All u hear is talk about Tyson butts and elbows ...together with Duvas hopeless advice. The fight was agreed before he fought Bey not after.Due to the cut they put it back and Tyson fought Thomas instead.Ty had over 30 stitches after the Bey cut...he fought Tyson 7 months later which was nuts...the cut opened again in round 3. Yes Ty fell on hard times...ended up back home... The bad blood stemmed from Tysons jealousy at Ty gettin the superhw slot at the olympics. In his quarter final v Lennox...Tyson is ringside shouting for Lewis...Ty went on to win gold to the envy of Tyson. In the build up to their pro bout all Ty did was state he was going to outbox outmove Tyson...what was he supposed to say ? Put up a braver better show than many....Berbick Bruno Tubbs Williams Spinks etc....this was total peak Tyson.
Interesting, didnt know this. makes sense, when after the Lewis fight Tyson says me and Lennox have known each other since we were kids and he knows i love him and his mother
Wass1985. You stated that at the point he fought Tyson he was A. a shot fighter B a wino C a crack head A. He was 15-0...wins over Tillis Sims Snipes Bey...look at the shape he was in...watch him in the early stages watch the shots he stood up too ?? B. Drink issues started later. C. Went into rehab re drugs December 84..clean since. watch his wins v Occasio, Marin performance in defeat by Bowe......Drug riddled wino ? Dont think that would be possible.
Azzer...yes.. it stems from the sparing they did together too..in Lewis book it says they trained together at D'amatos place for a short while...Lewis says he was a nice kid out of the ring but an animal in it...inevitably Lewis says he got the better of him.Tyson used this as the reason he cheered for Lewis at the olympics...the American team got along well and there was bad feeling at his behaviour..allegedly Biggs and a few others didnt want Tyson hangin around with them as they didnt like his behaviour towards women..groping them etc.. Make of that what you will.
Abusing cocaine doesn't leave your body looking out of shape!! Biggs looked **** poor in his fights prior to Tyson and was damaged goods, the guy wouldn't have ever have beaten him anyways even if he'd lived his life like a monk!
Judgedredd.. thanks...regarding Tyrell i know my subject well. Its a long tale...but i had to do a project on a sports star who fell from grace several years ago...somehow i ended up with Tyrell...(Bertain Tyrell Biggs)..known to friends as 'Burt'...Tyrell was thought better to use when he started boxing...as a tennage basketball star he was known as Burt...his teamate think his name was Gene Banks went on to become a famous basketball player.. in college Biggs was thought a better prospect than him...Ty wandered into Joe Fraziers gym to beef up and the rest went from there...Tys brother and father were into boxing..his brother Xavier has trained fighters..and had a thriving gym Ty trains kids in Philadelphia...but he's fallen a long way im afraid...shame as a great guy...ive got signed pics an original programme signed from the Tyson fight plus an actual ticket from thefight and a signed photo of him landing a jab on Tyson in round one. He has 2 regrets...he wished he had been more dedicated after the tyson defeat...and that he had looked after his money...it went on divorce women and lawyers according to him !
Nice bit of background. Do you think he would've taken a version of the title if Tyson hadn't been around?
Biggs got hooked by drugs. He`s winning that bout but knows he`ll always have to fight it. Although noting he hasn`t used drugs since leaving a California rehab institute in January, 1985, Biggs calls his abstinence ``a continual thing.`` ``I always will be recovering,`` he says. ``I can`t say that I`m cured. You don`t get cured, you get well. I`m well now, and I`ve dedicated the rest of my career to a march to the title and to being sober. ``There are a lot of people who come out and still can`t get it together. Look at Micheal Ray Richardson, Steve Howe, Quintin Dailey. Cocaine and alcohol are baffling, powerful and exciting. You can never outdo that. So I have to do everything within my power to overcome these urges and temptations. ``I don`t put myself in bad situations,`` says Biggs, who still attends Biggs got hooked by drugs. That`s why I talk about it.`` It took years before he could do that . . . after free-basing cocaine, screaming and fighting with his wife and son, breaking furniture, enduring screeching nightmares and moments when his heart raced so fast he thought it would explode . . . after drinking excessively in an effort to stop drugs and battling guilt without being able to stop abusing his body. and drug abuse counseling sessions. ``I can enjoy myself without putting any substances into my body. God I hate proving your Tyson nuthuggers wrong all the time!!
Wass1985 He looked poor in his fights before Tyson ? He won world and olympic gold. Beat number 8 ranked Sims with one hand after breaking collar bone early. Beat Tillis...in his next fight Tillis took Tyson the distance. Beat Snipes ranked 10 in world. Beat Bey ranked 9 Biggs was ranked 1. Damaged goods ? Yes he had a damaged eye..! Shoulda taken time to heal but Lou Duva didnt wanna miss the Tyson date. Shot fighter...? Nonsense. Wino ?..... Go and watch his fight v Prime Bowe on u tube. Ty was past his best by then...but watch that fight and you might give a honest fighter a bit of credit.
