a little overrated, he was never this invincible bulldozer, but he was a freak of nature that was almost impossible to go h2h to trade against.
Or you could say Never beat any of the 5 legit heavyweight champs in his era(Holyfield, Bowe, Moorer, Foreman, Lewis) Lost to Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield, Desire Washington Never was able to KO a legit top ten "super" heavyweight Mike Tyson was over rated Really its just like Drew101 said, he's over rated and under rated That being said....of course Evander Ranks higher. Come on now you guys:-(
I've boxed amatuer, sparred many rounds with the Junior Mddleweight Carlos Molina, have been watching boxing since 1989 and have seen every Mike Tyson fight. There are guys on here more knowledgable than me, but my resume isn't to damn bad on this subject. If fact, I was cheering for Mike in that fight. Evander was too much man for him, plain and simple. Thanks for your input though.
That is all talk I said you were never headbutted and you gace your lifetime acheivments, which mean fu ck all Any time a fighter uses dirty tactics and gains a significant advantage it takes away from the credit try should receive for a win and being able to get away with constant headbutts give you one of the biggest advantages you can have in a boxing ring
You are right...Tyson jacked both Holmes and Spinks with pretty good elbows, so take those off his resume then and look what you got left....
They didn't case the same damage as headbutts If you like fighting like that go and watch UFC , creating should not be condoned
This is a great analysis but I think people underestimate the amount of personal turmoil he went through leading up to the douglas fight. I was never a fan of his, in fact I was one of his biggest detractors at the time. Tyson was constantly in the news, everything from ****,to getting married to the wicked Ms givens, suing don king, the death of cus, jail, court appearance after appearance, going broke, divorcing Ms givens . . . and that as like in one week. lol. My point is Tyson was a great fighter who's star shone brightly but due to all of the personal turmoil faded as fast as it rose. I am not saying that Tyson would have won against Buster because douglas fought one of the most beautiful fights I have ever seen that night, but the truth is that was not the Tyson of the Spinks fight. The rage in tyson made him the fighter he was, the fighter who blasted up the heavyweight division to become the youngest HW Champ in History, but it was that same rage that he could not control on his own that lead to his own self destruction. At his very best I would not say unbeatable, but there are only a handful of fighters I would favour over him peak v peak. I say Ali, Holmes, Lennox and Louis were the only ones who had the tools to be favourite.
I don't condone it. My point is that when you are defending Mike Tysons legacy, whining about other fighters getting rough or "dirty" with him is not a strong or good position to take in my opinion. Yes Evander is a notorious headbutt-fuc ker. Mike had plenty of his own issues. They fought, Evander won. Yes Jasper, drews post was really good and sums it up perfectly.
Mike tyson usually got penalised when he faught dirty , for evander refs turned a blind eye that why it effects his reputation more than tyson
He may be overrated by some but let's be real can you even name 5 Heavyweights(Not Super-heavyweights like the Kitschko's, Lewis, Foreman)that you'd rank higher? I can only think of 2, Mohamed Ali and Joe Louis. The rest are debatable at best imho.
I'd argue that he was still prime, though hardly peak. Peak Tyson was the one who eviscerated Spinks. But he was still fast and powerful and could hit like hell. He was still a fighter who could have run through someone pretty easily, unless they were totally on point when they stepped inside the ring. Douglas was, though..And that's why, I don't think it's a loss that can be dismissed when discussing an All Time ranking. That said, Tyson was a scary mofo at his best. Tough to see too many guys being able to weather the type of thunder he'd be calling down in a hypothetical match-up.
There's a bit on youtube when Michael T (I call him that) ... anyway Michael T is throwing these big hooks at the red bag and then his trainer is all like "Not coming up but starting to come up, to make it perfect, it's good but it's not perfect." And that says to me that he was doing it wrong and makes mistakes just like all of us so lets not be too harsh on him because after all we are all human and one day we will maybe get sick or lose the use of one of our eyes and the youngsters will just be like look at that creepy old man in starbucks but you fought for our freedom and if only you could go back in time and tell yourself to not drink that bottle of whiskey...oh god....Maria?!?! I'M SORRY!!!!
how anyone can call someone who won a legit world title at age 20(record),had awesome two handed power, the hand speed of a middleweight, elusive defense, great offense, very good chin and stamina,as an overrated fighter is beyond me! what the **** else do you want? perfection? no such animal in any heavyweight champ.the most important thing,he was exciting(as long as the opponent did not run or clinch)!
