Oquendo is an underrated technician by my estimations. Tough one punch loss to Juan Ma six years ago--got clipped by a right hook basically on the back of the head. That's his only really bad beat. The Vazquez fight was tough and I think he just ran out of steam. But he's a good boxer who moves well coming forward and is able to get off shots coming in and then slip and then land good body shots. His best punch is his left hook (Mares' kryptonite?). I think he's better defensively than Mares and he throws sneaky good punches on the inside as opposed to Mares who seems to throw shots with his head down and wings shots from too far away. Oquendo seems to me to be a better overall boxer technically and puts his shots together better. For the gamblers out there, there is some good money to be made betting Oquendo. He's a pretty big underdog in this fight, and I don't see it that way at all. If you add everything up, it's worth betting. Mares has been inactive and had promotional/manager troubles; he has lost some confidence probably; switched trainers.
It's crazy. The guy has skills and can fight. I can't believe the odds are so heavy in Mares' favor, but, I guess the bookies see Oquendo as being such an unknown and believe Mares will come back in spectacular fashion. This is a tough, tough fight for Abner.
IB made a great point a while ago that even before the Jhonny Gonzalez fight Abner was showing a degree of frailness in the ring... He was shook up to varying degrees in just about every fight he had leading up that match, with the exception of the Morel wipe out. In my opinion he looked absolutely ragged against Ponce before the hail mary hook, and look at Ponces record since 2010... He used to be a murderous puncher, but his style completely changed and he lost much of his ability to finish. In his last 10 fights since the ass end of 2010 he stopped 2 of his opponents, and he was knocked down in one of the fights he finished.
I thought he flat out lost to Darchinyan. Vic was landing bombs on Abner for most of the fight. But, yeah, Abner has had some questionable wins and he's definitely looked less than star perfect in several fights. He was not looking great in the Ponce fight--we agree on that. I just can't believe Oquendo isn't getting any respect...I mean, am I the only one watching footage of him? lol I think Oquendo will be able to get on the inside with Abner and light him up. Oquendo's chin looks pretty good to me aside from the obvious Juan Ma fight. Abner being with Virgil Hunter now doesn't mean dick to me. Just because Hunter has Ward doesn't mean anything. Oquendo KO left hook round five:bbb
Hmmm, bet365 have him at +500. I'm tempted to place a hundred dollar bet on him. Time for some film study.
Don't touch bet365, Intertops has him at +650 and 5dimes at 7-1 If you win on 5dimes you keep your original bet plus your winnings as well, not the case on Intertops. Choose wisely sirs.
Worse bets have been made. Oquendo isn't some chump as the betting sites seem to suggest. I think Abner is going to try and outbox Oquendo in this fight and be VERY careful so as to not get clipped with anything big. That will hurt him offensively most likely so I don't really see Abner landing some kind of bomb that gets Oquendo out of there. If Oquendo is smart, he'll go right after Abner and try and get on the inside where he works best.
