Not being mean here but is it too much to ask that they make him use a translator for interviews these day?

sam peter caused that damage.... toney took huge shots in those fights.... had no business being at heavyweight.... lack of professionalism ie. being fat and lazy is what caused it.

Toney has been slurring his words since the late 90's. The damage was done long before Peter.

He's set to fight Russian journeyman Evgeny Orlov this month, a fight that he could very well lose at this stage.....

I think Toney has been speaking a different language and should start speaking English......................Toney is finished and has been for years now. I do think he should fight Wilder thought, as he could probably beat him............

It's most likely from his whole long career. He spars a shitload, which is sometimes where a lot of the damage occurs. This is believed to be a reason why Terry Norris suffered brain damage, he was known to go all out in sparring.

There is a belief that his poor speech is from a lot of cigar smoking, and just being a lazy speaker, as he was never the most eloquent guy.

I don't buy it. That doesn't help, but the decline in his speech pattern is troubling and I can only imagine how many blows he's taken to the head in fights and in the gyms for 25 years.

I always knew Toney was tough, but the fights in 2006 against Rahman (when he suffered a lacerated kidney) and Peter convinced me that he is one of toughest motherfucckers to ever lace up the gloves.

Right hooks the left side of the head, the left frontal lobe controls speech that why most older boxers are mush mouths.

Wasn't he down against Mike MCcallum and Roy Jones?

I think this shows that a lot of his "chin" is really good defense.

Perhaps in the big picture he did have an ATG chin, but it has to be considered low end ATG or perhaps just short because of his knock downs to middleweights.

Reggie Johnson dropped Toney at 160. Toney seemed genuinely hurt by that, it wasn't a mere flash KD or balance KD.

    Jones was a balance KD.

Maybe he was a little drained? He wouldn't be the only guy who showed better punch resistance as he moved up in weight.

The KD against Peter in the rematch was also a balance KD, he was genuinely hurt on more than one occasion in the first fight but didn't go down.

It's a combo I think of great chin and his defense.

Yeah, and let me be clear that I agree that in some sense he does have an ATG chin for being able to take punches successfully anywhere from middle to heavy, it is just that, based on his shortcomings, I doubt that it was completely his chin per se but also defense, and perhaps the overrated nature of some of him heavyweight opponents.

Yeah I agree it is not completely his chin. that's why it's hard sometimes to rate and compare chins. You have to take into account other factors, like defense.

Awhile ago, I remember a thread on b-scene comparing the chins of Margarito and Mosley. This was before the Mundine fight, and I believe that stoppage was due to injury anyway. A few people saying "Margarito has been stopped and Mosley has not been, so Mosley easily wins....end thread". What a thoughtless argument.

How about the fact that Mosley, while being no defensive whiz, had a better defense than Margarito, and a different mindset? Mosley had a tendency to shell up a bit and get more defensive (hold) when he was getting hit a lot. Margarito keeps coming and acts like a lunatic who enjoys getting hit. Mosley's never stood up as human punching bag for nearly 8 rounds against a good puncher such as himself, like Margarito did and took a gazillion right hands before finally getting knocked down. And then some idiots claimed it meant he lost his punch resistance.
