What if Ibeabuchi never went to jail, and fought Lewis? Could he have won?

No, the bloke was very ill, and we have experience of people with mental illness fighting Lewis. It does not end too well for them...

Probably not. Lewis was too skilled, had a reach advantage and was just a better boxer, you can't count on anomalies to form an opinion on, although it's surprising how many posters go down this path.

If Ike had stayed out of jail he would have just amounted to being another Lennox Lewis victim.

Lewis didn't fight Byrd so he could take the biggest money fight of his career against Mike Tyson and he didn't fight Ruiz so he could take the bigger money fight against the undefeated American Michael Grant. Lewis didn't duck anybody, he fought the best in the era including top prospects like Mavrovic and Akinwande who nobody else wanted to fight. Why would he duck a fringe contender like Chris Byrd?

You can never say never, but I'd favor Lennox.

If he wasn't on his game, Ike was certainly live enough to spring an upset. Ike doesn't have the jab Ray Mercer did, but there are some parallels as far as toughness and stamina go that lead me to think he could have some success against Lewis if he could close the distance.

Overall though, Lewis was much more proven and the smarter, more well rounded fighter. If he stays disciplined and doesn't get lax defensively, he wins it for me.

My pick would be Lennox via decision. Ike was durable and had some skills. Its also not out of the question that he could have scored an upset. Lennox was starting to look more and more vulnerable by the early 2000's and Ike was never exposed.

Lennox was the proven quality, Ike looked durable but the test would be a Lennox type of long range banger...LL wins

There was some scuttlebutt years back about Kirk Johnson really troubling Ibeabuchi is sparring sessions. That is neither here nor there just a rumor that was never substantiated. Whether that to be true or not I like Lennox Lewis big here. The president showed a great beard vs Tua. Lennox is in a whole different leauge than Tua though.

    Lewis KO 7 Ibeabuchi

Mavrovic a top-contender???? One of the best in era???

His best win was 8 rd body shot KO of famous Julius Francis:huh
Yes the same Francis who was previously KO'd in 4 by John Ruiz and soon was destroyed by Vitali in 2 rds.

Mavrovic was skinny, featherfisted and totally unknown boxer, who happened to have good chin and decent (but far from great) skills, that's all.

If not his EBU title (Richard Dunn, JP Coopman and Lucien Rodriguez also held EBU title), he would've never been in top-10 WBC.

He never beat anyone of note, and you say he was more deserving challenger than Byrd?:-(

Say what you what with your fallacious revisionist thinking. Mavrovic was 27-0 with 22 KOs when Lewis fought him and was a dude nobody wanted to fight. Big guy with an awkward style with good power and combinations. It's too bad he got injured and had to retire prematurely.

When Lewis fought Mavrovic Byrd was not in the position to get a title shot. The only reasonable time when Byrd and Lewis could of fought was in 2002 but Lewis elected to take the 35 million and fight Tyson instead. Nobody can blame him for that.
