I ve just been told a story that Terry Downes was being a bit mouthy in a pub in London years ago and Roy Shaw told him to shut up, a bit of a swapping of obscenitys ensued and it ended up with Shaw beating Downes up quite bad outside. Guess theres boxing and theres street fighting.

Downes must have been pissed. Downes only had a short career and he still win the world title back then. Downes also beat Sugar Ray Robinson although Ray was in his forties. After the fight Downes said "I never beat Sugar Ray, I beat his ghost". Class.

Yeah quite a classy thing to say, he wouldnt have lasted long against a prime sugar ray and he knew it.

Aye it was a classy thing to say. There was another one were Downes took a beating off Dick Tiger early, early on in his career he was asked after the fight who he would like to fight next and Downes replied "The ******* who made this fight"

You never know with these stories... Downes could have been pissed for all we know but Shaw was a hard and feared man in his day.

Shaw fought and beat Ron Stander (few years after Stander had fought Frazier) but said himself everything he hit Stander with had no effect on him, but Stander had carried a broken rib into the fight so when Roy found that he got the win. He then states that had Stander not had the rib injury he would have got a pasting.

Seen as we're on the subject of these stories, I was told that not to long ago Brian Jacks & Gary Stretch (who is reknown for being a bit of a tosser after a drink) got into a fight in Thailand in which Brian Jacks took him apart.

Haha sounds like he had a great sense of humour. I dont know a lot about Downes but he must have been quite honest and down to earth. Going back to his altercation with Shaw there are possibly several different stories to what happened and the circumstances surrounding the brawl, that is what usually occurs in fights outside the ring.

A good street fighter will always beat a good boxer in a fight. A boxers downfall often is in square go is that they are programmed to do copy book things that there taught in gym with regards to boxing. Its in their instinct, were as the street fighter is used to no rules and its his instinct do whatever it takes to win fight.

Roy Shaw is a hard ****er of that there is no doubt but a world level boxer would take him out. Shaw's windmilling would be easily neutralised by a top pro. That's if they were both sober if course.

I knew a guy a few years ago, friend of a friend and he was a total bellend. His dad worked at Barlinnie prison, he told me that Scott Harrison got laid out by a little smackhead and went on to say how street fighting was different to boxing lol. I couldn't stand that bit of bull****, Scott Harrison is a hard ****er no matter where in the world he is, no skinny smack rat is taking him out!!!

A high percentage of street fights go to ground which make the pro boxer boxing skills useless.

true, and take in kicks to the balls, headbutts, elbow in throat eg, boxing skills are not going to help. I kNow a old guy really well, whom when young was a hard man, but only 5'10 and about 12st, and when his mates were getting bullied in Scotland by the US Military Heavyweight Champ, who was on leave from faslane, they went and got the old guy I know , who went and offered the boxer who a few people tell me was about 6'5 and 17st , a square go, and he knocked the boxer out with 1 punch then showed him street fighting skills. This guy was a good friend of Scottish Great Peter Keenan, who said he was hardest man he ever meet, would kill any boxer. Plenty like it from shipyards, in fact still a few guys I know in Glasgow in their late 50s early 60s who worked on shipyards who can still batter the young hardmen in the schemes

Roy shaw doesn't go to the ground. For joe average to take Scott Harrison to ground without being hit with a 3 punch combination on his chin he would have to be very lucky indeed.

I've seen a few 'MMA' lads take fights to the ground outside clubs/pubs and every time they gave ended up getting booted in the head by the other guys mates!!!

Lol, I seen my drunk mate about 9 years ago batter a sober 20st cage fighter in a Glasgow pub, as the cage fighter ran with his head down to try and wrestle my mate to the ground, my mate just side stepped him and hit him with a right hook and put him down and kicked **** out of him. This is problem with trained fighters, very predictable, as I have said its their instinct to do what they are trained

Years ago , i remember getting sick of some silly cant always mouthing of about the street fighter , boxer thing , And the reason was he was a big guy i was a lot smaller than him , He was just a facking big bully and decided my lack of respons was cos i was scared of him like everyone else .
Anyway it had to happen and we went in the pub carpark to sort it , after months of him having a go i was sick of it .

It simply went i was the boxer he was the big bad hard street fighter , , we started , i moved around and cracked him some belters , he was'nt really fazed he was a big guy , when he did manage to grab hold , we went to the ground , I sunk my teeth in his finger and bit through it , i had my finger in his eye gonna poke it out ,, he screamed and begged me to let go , so i did , I then kicked him in the head , kicked his ribs , and left him a babling mess .

Guess the lesson he learnt was , even boxers can kick and bite , and above all , he was a big fat flabby , UNFIT git who was puffing and blowing after 2 miuites , I was an athlete used to being punched and i did'n't gas in fact i had only just got started . .

Not to say that there are not guys out there who will beat boxers , but just remember boxers like to fight and will not go to peices when it does'nt go there own way .
