Even if he does, it'll need to wait another 10 years or more before rating him. Modern fighters get under-appreciated most of the time.

 

All Floyd had to do was fight Casamayor and Paul Williams and they wouldn't call him a ducker.

 

Money will be remembered as the best boxer of many generations. 1998 -2016..

But I still remember that 16 year old kid on fox sports that was beating up men and gained a mythical rep for giving sweet pea trouble sparring up in Virginia.

he will certainly be deemed one of the greatest boxers in history. Alla Sam Langford, Henry Armstrong, Willie Pep !

 

We'll let time be the judge. He's far and away the best fighter of this era (although I do think Pac eclipsed him here and there) and one of the very few moderns who can be rightly called 'great.'
Exceptional talent, but there is no question that not fighting the obvious guy out there will heavily penalise him. (I don't care about the why's right now.)

I'm just worried that it sets a precedent in boxing...that two of the best fighters of their generation can stay away from each other and pretty much get away with it. Usually, it took time to get the biggest fights made (Whitaker-Chavez comes to mind) but they eventually got it done.
I figured it would be the case here too...but it looks like more and more that the fight will never happen. And that really, really sucks.

I hope that it is not a portent of things to come in later generations.

 

I think it depends on who his last 4 or 5 fights are against. Beating Maidana convincingly in his match if he can do it might help his cause, but probably not a legacy builder. At any rate I think history will be kinder to him than the present time. There's a lot of world title fights, good names, and belts in multiple divisions on that resume.

 

I agree with Magoo depends on who his last few fights are against but he has fought some good names throughout his career and has won impressively. Its a shame the PAC fight never came off when the timing was right that could have been a good win for him or judging from the way he got rocked by Mosley in the 2nd round a bad loss. At this point he is getting older and has proven he is a great defensive fighter, its not his fault he did not live in the era of Hearns,Duran,Leonard or an even tougher era the SRR era of massively deep waters and wide oceans of welterweight -middleweight waters.

For this era he is the best and I think he will be rated accordingly, its not easy to go to 46-0 or 50-0 not easy at all and Floyd has proven to be a winner and if he gets to 50-0 it would be amazing in any era

 

Pacman has faught better names and achieved more between 1998-2014

 

He needs to fight keith thurman, that guy is young and dangerous

 

Floyd should fight Pacquiao, beat him and then retire.

Certainly one of the greats of our sport, considering the titles he has one at the different weights and his victory over another great in De La Hoya and another great in Mosley

At this stage I don't know who he can fight that could enhance his legacy

-Always felt he should have climbed up to beat Martinez for the true 160 title
Not cause Im a detractor and wanted to see him go way up to lose but because Id like to see him do what both Sugars did and got 147 to 160 where Tito and Oscar failed a generation ago

-Young guys, he beat Canelo who can continue to enhance that legacy....Porter and Thurman are young guys who can seem better on the record over time


What I fear after Maidana 2 is he will fight Cotto in a rematch at a catchweight for the middleweight title which is great but will seem kind of cherrypicked, and Canelo 2 for the money

I like Mayweather and have watched him for over 10 yrs, didn't root for him in every fight but I admire him as a boxer....Oddly enough I blaim both sides for the Pacquiao fight not occurring but I think the fight hurts Floyd more

Floyd came out of retirement to call him out and talk ridiculous **** and then the fight never happened, for some reason I don't know why I think the fight not happening hurts Floyds legacy a little more

I also think since Manny fought Marquez, Morales, Barrera and De La Hoya against those odds he doesn't necessarily need Floyd whereas Floyd could really use a win like Manny

 

50-0 would be amazing. Mayweather has beaten at least 4 men who will be in the hall of fame. Without a doubt, Mayweather has been the best pound for pound fighter for a decade. That is very rare. And he's American, so credit and respect after he retires will come a bit easier.

Critics of Mayweather will point out that he really lost a close decision to Castillo in their first match, and never fought Pac. In reality, Mayweather vs. Pac was a hard fight to make as Floyd has his own company for promotions, and both guys didn't need to fight each other to make a ton of money. Had they fought, I'd go with Mayweather via decision.
