Why do people think boxers are "scared" of certain opponents?

It's a weird macho thing. They like to watch a violent sport. But they regularly see guys who are a million times tougher and braver than themselves and need to find reasons to call them pussies.

Not afraid to face the guy, but afraid to lose status and income if the lose.
While being afraid to get hurt badly might actually be one of the reasons too.

I had that once when I was younger. Not afraid of any guy, not even when they were almost 7 feet tall, until I faced a guy known for his extreme punching power, from a country we knew nothing about only that it was the big bad during the cold war. I was actually shaking when I had to face the guy and got KO'd to the body in under a minute.

Almost all fighters are scared, but a lot less against guys they know that have little chance of beating/hurting them.

It's like the high school bully who runs away when he has to face a more badass guy as he is. It's life.

 

Fighters are human.
Humans have emotions.
Fear is an emotion.

 

These guys have been fighting since they were children.

The ones at the top have been winning fights since they were kids, and fighting the best around.

Making business decisions is different from being "scared"

When people tell you fighters were scared to fight Mike Tyson believe them. Some of his fights were decided in the stare-down as the referee gave his final instructions.

 

well someone of them fear getting beat because they fear losing a legacy based on being undefeated.

when they know they will get beat, or others might well beat them, it puts shits up them and they run off to fight weaklings or old people.

 

I don't think these guys are scared of each other, but I could understand why they wouldn't want to lose (not that I condone it)

Think of it this way: You make X amount of money, your popularity is high. You have a high chance of losing to John Smith. What happens if you lose? That X amount is cut in half, 70% of your "fans" are gone, and you're immediately forgotten. And if you win, you probably won't get much credit.

Look at Garcia-Matthysse. #1 and #2 going at it. Garcia went on to clearly beat Matthysse and gets little to no respect to this day. Matthysse lost and he's immediately forgotten, nobody talks about him anymore.

Look at Provo-Algieri. Algieri took this dangerous fight, fought his heart out and displayed good technical ability and beat Provo. Provo's forgotten, Algieri gets no credit (although he is getting a Pac fight).

Danny Garcia fought the best like people wanted him to, but the minute he fights a small name, they're back to talking ****. The same would happen with Mayweather if he fought Pacquiao. If Floyd beat him, Pac's stock would drop tremendously, and people would be right back to trash talking Floyd on his next opponent. The same against Golovkin and Kovalev. Defeating the boogeyman is good for those that care, but not those that matter (the casuals).

Not trying to bring this thread down, but Mayweather and Pacquiao's career numbers thrive off of the idea that only they can beat each other. That's why when Pacquiao lost, BOTH of their numbers dropped. They're actually making more money not fighting each other.

Case in point, when KINGPIN was getting ready to fight Vitali, I asked him how he was feeling, and he looked me dead in the eye & said "I have a daughter, there's a chance she may lose her dad in the ring, Vitali can punch".

It's true maybe at a rate of about one tenth of the times it's said about potential fights, at most, in my opinion.
