GGG is obviously at middleweight, in a division that could potentially get alot more interesting in the coming months. Why would GGG want to move up when he has the potential to cash in big time twice, the idea of fights between him and Canelo and Cotto, is scintillating and should be any boxing fans dream come true, they would both be action fights with guaranteed fireworks ending with probable stoppages, which would propel GGG into the stratosphere in terms of fanfare and marketability. If he cannot secure those fights there are alot of routes he can go in the MW division Chavez Jr, Lemieux, Kirkland, Lara, Sturm, Soliman, Quillen, Jacobs, Murray, Korobov, Rubio, and eventually Saunders and Murata may be potential draws. Promoter and Channel disputes aside, if they can be made, they are all moderate to large potential money makers, for K2 HBO and GGG. So why would anyone in their right mind want to fight Andre Ward, he is the epitome of high risk, low reward, he is hardly a PPV star he barely gets ratings on HBO, he is not particularly well known to casual fans the fight wouldn't be a big seller. Ward's style will do nothing to make GGG look good it is impossible to look good against Ward, his grappling, hugging, headbutting, clinching style is all wrong for GGG. What is the upside? Can GGG beat him maybe, but then what will he do now sitting atop the Super Middleweight Division, he will have beaten the top guy there is nowhere else to go, everything else would seem like a step down, even Froch who is also a potential nightmare for GGG, everyone would say Ward beat Froch, GGG beat Ward who cares. What does that leave him with a move up to Light Heavyweight? With GGG's build SMW is a bit of a stretch. It would leave him with a similar quandry that Ward is facing now. He would be the King on his throne with no worthy challengers. Floyd is not going to fight GGG so it is almost pointless to talk about, but I don't blame GGG for trying, he is bigger but not too big, he can potentially get down in weight, if he won it would pay huge dividends and if he lost he could always say he was weight drained and it would probably only be on points, his air of invincibility would be somewhat shattered but if he performed well enough he would be given credit and remain a decent draw. It is not him picking on a smaller guy like most of the *****s say, its him wanting to get alot of money and a massive scalp to put on his mantle, who wouldn't want that. Probably his best option is to aim for a Canelo and Cotto shot, if not that continue to clean out MW, move up cautiously to SMW work his way up through the ranks, Bika, Abraham, Groves,Froch and then eventually to Ward. Take his time he is a very young, heathly, fresh 32 year old, with many more years in the business if he can continue to dominate the way he has and not take to much damage he has plenty of time to achieve his goals. Most fans want too much, too soon. And also have many irrational expectations.
Yeah pretty much, you are on the money. People also talk age, but Martinez began his MW reign at 35. Plus as I think bears repeating, because it is true - GGG-Ward doesnt happen until Golovkin draw is big enough to carry the entire promotion. Ward adds nothing other than credible B-side. The fight will happen when GGG is a PPV fighter and needs the most credible name possible to maximize PPV sales. Besides, Ward is just building the fight anyhow. Anyone who knows anything including Ward knows the fight cant be made yet. By the time it does happen, it will be a huge event. Ward wants to retire ASAP, and to do that , he basically needs either Chavez or GGG - preferably both, in PPV fights. Ward is a B side, so he is trying to pick fights with A-side fighters which makes perfect sense really. I just think he would have had more success if he talked UP the fight instead of pretending like his lawsuit-riddled arse was avoided or relevant.
Hopkins was 36 when he fought Trinidad and 35 when he finally unified with Holms. Up to that point Hopkins career wasn't much better than what Golovkin's has been to date. And that's depending how you rank his best opponents up to that point in time: Robert Allen, Antwun Echols, Syd Vanderpool, Andrew Council, and past prime JMW's- David Jackson & Simon Brown, with a green and untested Glenn Johnson.
Of course it can be made now. That would be a big payday for Golovkin, and he would get a chance to fight one of the best out there. However, there is a good chance he'll loose that fight which is why it won't be happening.
I think after this fight, if he really impresses, the demand for a mega fight with one of the top names is envitable. It's a shame the punishers not around anymore, he woulda stepped up and it would be a big name for ggg.
So, Ward is able to fight right now? Who is the opponent for his tune up fight(because you know he's gonna need a tune up) What is the date? Ward fansrofl) seem to know a lot about the situation...except for one piece of information. When is Ward's next fight?
Lawsuits, so no. Unless Ward just wont fight anyone but Golovkin for some reason. Hard to imagine his inactivity and lawsuits are coincidence. Also not a big payday for Golovkin, as I said - Ward brings nothing to the table other than what HBO is willing to dish out, which they dont have a business case for. Golovkin has live gate+foreign distro revenue. Until he reaches PPV stage, Golovkin would have to take a massive paycut and fight for pennies to get Ward the 2m Ward demands for any fight. Lots of people think that because Ward is rated P4P #2 that there must be a lot of money there. Thats not really the case. Thats why Golovkin saying that he will fight out of 160 for PPV only now. People should remember that last year around this time and before when the Ward-GGG fight was floated to both of them, K2/GGG was open to it and Ward (literally) laughed it off and fought E-rod. Thats because Golovkin was bad risk/reward ratio for Ward. Now the roles are reversed, Ward is in a business pickle, and Golovkin is the guy commanding the HBO CB purses + gate and foreign - basically outside of Cotto is the money guy in the division. Suddenly Ward cant talk himself into a GGG fight fast enough. :conf
Stay at 160 fighting whoever until he can get a unification and STFU about 168 for as long as he's unwilling to fight the best there.
People continue to underestimate how good Bernard Hopkins was in 1997. The wins against John David Jackson, Glen Johnson, and Andrew Council are impressive, at least in my opinion. Not too many boxers would have went 3-0 against those guys in the same calendar year. Hopkins could have beat Montell Griffin and Roy Jones Jr. that year, you guys will find a way to discredit Hopkins.
you cannot be serious saying that is the very definition of buying into the hype EDIT : just realized you meant in terms of opponents, which has some validity the difference is that Hopkins was the best MW in the world, but as with jones at LHW, there were some European names who didn't make a serious effort to make their names in the US to challenge their mantle. golovkin, on the other hand, is a European fighter who does want to be the best in his division - which is why people are touting him as the next champion elect, and why guys like ottke, michaelewski etc never had golovkin's international rep still, this leaves golovkin a step below where Hopkins was pre-tito
To be honest, I doubt Canelo would have beaten him in their scheduled match. His last fight against Ishida, Williams pitched a shutout from bell to bell, he looked really good, and his volume and height would have been a real test for GGG to overcome as well.
Next fight should be Soliman, Soliman said he would take the fight. With Golovkin capturing the IBF Belt, he gets in better Position in the 160 class.. Noone knows what happen with Cotto an dthe WBC belt, so first collect the red one.. After getting that one, maybe Quilling has the balls to fight him.. so there are three major belt on line + the IBO After all that, the WBC situation should be more clear, may Cotto still is at 160 or there was a fight for the vacant title in between.. There is no need to have an eye on F++king Adre "loudmouth" Ward at the moment :deal
soliman doesn't do anything for him except get him a belt that the federations are going to break up anyway
