I can't believe that Evangelista was legitimaly stopped, he was milking **** in there imo (not talking about fix or anything, but that doesnt look like a legit knockdown)
You're not being THAT harsh. Marvis was way out of his depth. Better than some of Larry's other opponents, though.
As hurtful as it is to admit it you could well be right,McVey. The way the great man was on that night. As I said on another post,YES Ali was ultimately responsible for his own actions but the boxing commissions are a complete and utter disgrace for granting him a licence to fight at this point. Most of all,Herbert Muhammad was a total piece of **** for not talking Ali out of it ! If anyone had the Greatest's ear it would have been him.
Bundini didn't want Dundee to stop the fight after the 10th either, he wanted Ali to be sent out for more. Years later he sold some of Ali's memorabilia and possessions to line his own pocket If there was a poster boy for mooching pieces of crap Drew Brown would be it.
Ali was surrounded by them, the Black Muslims took his mind and his $$$, we dont hear too much about that but its true. Ali was afraid, in fact Angelo Dundee may have been the best friend he had
I agree with you about Angelo. He no doubt recognised that Ali would've had those last two terrible fights with Holmes and Berbick no matter what so he stuck around.
If Dundee had been his best friend he would not have worked the corner that night he would have walked away earlier as Pacheco did. Ali's best friend is Howard Bingham.
Ferdie Pacheco sent detailed medical reports of Ali's failing kidney's and liver problems to Ali, Dundee and Herbert Muhammad, none of the three replied .All three are culpable for Ali's present condition.
All fighters have some kind of credentials, there were weak chalengers on paper at that time and some of them won titles against Holmes' rival champions! Mike Dokes was a good fighter, Tubbs was a good fighter but look at their credentials as chalengers on paper. Did they have better resumes than guys like Leroy Jones, Scot Frank and marvis Frazier? LeDoux, Zannon, Rodriguez and Evangelista were limited up to a level but at least they were experienced and had been around. It's not like nobody knew who they were. In the case of the Europeans they were used to championship rounds and big occasions in another continent. The European championship is a decent level. It's not World championship level (or supposed to be) but still a championship all the same where there process of winning, defending and fighting championship rounds must amount for something. A degree of talent, dedication and substance is required. A lot of World champions who came through the European championship would regard the experience of defending the lesser title as an advantage in challenging for the World title. Muhammad Ali wound up being a very poor opponent and it is easy to say after the sorry episode that he brought the least resistance to the table of any challenger but for a historical perspective it was still an important fight and tied up loose ends. I think it is Scott Frank. Who was only suposed to be a tune up. Nice guy, winning record all the same he had not been in a big fight, had the least credentials availible was not remotely proven as an amateur either. He was game though. To put things into perspective 11-3 Mike Jameson went the full distance with Scott months before facing Holmes yet by the time Scott Frank fought Holmes for the title Frank Bruno, years from Euro title level himself, knocked Jameson out in two rounds.
Usually when you are waiting for a title shot you get excited if it looks like a competitive fight or the challenger has a chance to win. I think in the case of Holmes this was a rarity but some of the young underdogs almost upset Holmes- Weaver was a big underdog at 18-9, Marvis had 10 fights and fought no one, the 3 Euros had less than a 0 chance, 10-2-2 Spinks was already destroyed by Coetzee, Witherspoon,Smith, were 14-15 fight guys, 13 fight Ocasio or 14-01 Bey who lost 14 of his next 20 fights, Sorry I did not get excited Cooney despite only fighting 2 one round fights in over 2 years and never fighting past 8 rds seemed like Holmes biggest risk while champ. Shavers was already beaten by Holmes and Snipes at 22-0 was dropped 2X by Coetzee so no one gave him a chance but he almost shocked Holmes and the world In fact when Holmes fought M. Spinks I thought Spinks was a weak pick as a heavyweight VIRGIN
I get what you're saying but Dundee said that Ali would have still gone through with the fight, he had to be in his corner.
