GGG has a HORRIBLE DEFENSE! Geale landed 39 Percent of his blows!

Abel needs to fix that defense ASAP. Because sooner or later they'll run into someone accurate enough and strong enough to land often, and hurt often.

 

It's GGG who decides to be cautious or NOT cautious with his defense. He does seem to be more open once he feel his confidence. And he became less D responsible after he dropped Stevens and Geale in the second rounds. But it's all tactics. You may think he has a leaky D, but he makes this choice to trade when he feels he can.
I remember GGG saying that once he floored Stevens, he knew it was just a matter of time. You would notice how Stevens was throwing his trademark left hooks off the backfoot after KD, and that's not the punch that would KO GGG. The same story with Geale. Look at his right hand over GGG's jab - it had no leverage whatsoever.

With Ward GGG won't be that reckless, at least until he hurts Andre.

You fight the man in front of you. You fight Geale differently than you'd fight Froch. You're more careful with one compared to the other. Nonetheless, GGG does subtle things to remove the power from guys' punches. Stuff that would be lost on you, but the point is, GGG is rarely hit cleanly with full force.

You're probably one of the idiots who thought GGG was just eating Steven's bombs, huh? No, you don't just eat Steven's bombs, the fact is he was never hit cleanly with full force. GGG uses slight angle changes, deflecting with shoulder/arms, rolling/pulling with punches, and controlling distance to diffuse punches. He also monitors his opponent's leverage opportunity, being aware of when an opponent can get leverage and when he can't (feet, positional angles, etc), so that he knows when and where there is more danger.

He's an aggressive counter puncher, who's style requires him to be in harms way at all times, so these tricks are invaluable and he uses them very well. Only someone clueless about the technical side of boxing says stuff like "GGG has no defense" or "GGG is easy to hit". I assure you his past opponents and some of the better trainers like Freddie Roach will tell you that's not the case. GGG only looks like he's walking through punches, he only appears impervious, but appearances can be deceiving. The fact is the punches he appears to walk through aren't hitting him as hard as the appear because of what he's doing.

 

Correct. GGG picked flapper Geale cos the knew in advance that Geale is a feather fisted flapper who couldn't put a dent in a pound of butter.

He's a pressure counter puncher with enough on-the-fly ring IQ to tailor his plan to his opponent and adjust when the situation calls for it.

Golovkin doesn't compromise defense for offense until he knows his opponent well enough to know what he can get away with. He knows to maintain defensive integrity. GGG gives counterpunchers so few opportunities to land flush on him because he's got exceptional counterpunching ability himself. He wants his opponents to counter, which is why he varies the force on his shots when he's pressuring. It's to set up him countering you full force when you finally throw back.

If you don't throw and go into a shell, he's patient enough to simply break you down that way. The constant pressure and his ability to cut the ring off effiiently both fatigues his opponents and forces them to throw.....or they shell up and hope to survive.

This isn't your every day puncher, folks.

 

he was ranked 5th statistically in defense behind floyd, rigo, lara and a couple of other guys before the geale fight, but feel free to continue to make **** up.

A good offense can be a good defense. Golovkin is a good example of this. Pacquiao is as well (yes, I know he was knocked out, but it is an approach that he used to defeat many high level opponents). I don’t know why many fans don’t understand this. It is a different style, but an elite fighter can be offensively-minded. They may be more vulnerable than defensive virtuosos (I mean this with no sarcasm) like Ward and Mayweather, but if you can make your opponent fight your fight (a brawl in the case of Golovkin), that is a skill. Matthysse, another elite, all-action fighter, was able to do this against Peterson.

GGG's defense may not be as good as Mayweather or Sweat Pea or anything, but his Offence is better
