I noticed that Jones' usual replacement, Ward, was nowhere to be found at last night's telecast. Instead it was just a two man crew. We know he's not preparing for any fights, so it made me wonder if there is some sort of rift between Ward and HBO.

    Anybody have the scoop?

No he probably didn't want to deal with questions about him fighting GGG.

Ward wants GGG but HBO is scared of their Golden goose being exposed by Ward calling GGG out on his ducking of Ward. Simple.

No It's probably the usual crap where Goosen has the longer term relationship and the networks will side with Goosen to lock Ward out of money making opportunities.
Until Ward gets completely free of Goosen the old ******* will use every dirty trick in the book to make his life and career hell.
In the future I'm sure Ward will be wiser in who he does business with.

Ward has been more keen to fight GGG than the other way around. I don't think he would struggle to address that question beyond "it is a fight I would love to make and as soon as my managerial issues are cleared up, that is a fight I am targeting".

I do wonder if perhaps HBO are blackballing Ward to punish his inactivity in the ring by trying to financially choke him out of the ring.

Ward would've no doubt downplayed ggg last night and hbo couldn't have had that. Ward might have called him out on the air who knows?

Yeah, it was my thought that it may have something to do with the Goosen situation as well. Ward has done telecasts while the case was in arbitration, so it probably isn't anything contractual, but I wonder if it is HBO attempting to apply pressure to Ward on the back end. HBO puts together a budget for boxing and are likely losing money by Ward's inactivity.

Ward was offered the slot but pulled out due to his fear of GGG

Actually I think its because Ward is the commentator for BAD. RJJ is the commentator for WCB. They are actually two different programming structures/series at HBO. So it wasnt in the contract.

Wards recent comments about GGG probably negated any desire on HBO to write in an exception. Which I find a shame really, Ward can be professional and I still think he is the best commentator in boxing despite my opinion on some of the other crap hes reportedly been talking lately.
