Maybe a 40-year-old Fitzimmons after beating George Gardner in 1903?

Was Foreman really No.1 when he beat Moorer?

I think that we would have to recognise Hopkins as being the best lhw in the world after he beat Jean Pascal at 46, or at the least on par with the best.

He was lineal for whatever it was worth, but he certainly wasn't the best heavyweight in the world.

Is lineal the same as "the man who beat the man"? I'll admit to always being a bit confused about that.

Doesn't matter because hopkins beat the man who beat him. Dawson had to prove he was better by facing hopkins.

Moore wasnt the best LHW in 1962. Far from it IMO. He had been stripped by one agency in 1960 for refusing to defend against worthy challengers and would have the same thing happen in 1962 by the other agency that recognized him.

Dawson clearly beat Hopkins, Hopkins edged Pascal, Pascal clearly beat Dawson. That suggests that for this period Dawson and Pascal were the top two, Hopkins third...

I felt that Hopkins clearly beat Pascal both times to be honest.

Luis Estaba at light fly. Might not of had the greatest of competition in his weight class but probably proved himself the top man at 38ish. For a little man that is ancient.

I agree, I thought Hopkins won both Pascal fights. I sat with Mark Ramsey, Pascal's trainer after their second fight and asked him what he thought of them. Remarkably he said Pascal deserved to lose the second fight and that he thought the draw in the first fight was fair (which I didnt) but usually if a guy agrees with a draw it means his fighter lost, nobody likes draws).

I dont really understand how Dawson>Hopkins>Pascal>Dawson equals Dawson being better than the other two. To me this is a perfect example of styles making fights.
