found that quote in "Sonny Liston the real story behind the Ali fights by Paul Gallander"

    Quite impressive if true.

i remember a documentary of tyson where mike said that robinson could not be the greatest because ali was around 50 pounds heavier AND HE WAS FASTER .

Being bigger doesn't always mean slower.

Look at Tyson: He was a genetic freak who was as fast as most welters.

tyson wAS NOT AS FAST AS A WELTER, I T IS STUPID AND EXAGERATED, HE WAS FAST FOR HIS WEIGHT, THAT´S ALL, HIS SPEED IS OVERRATED BASED ON VIDEOS WHEN HE WAS 16 LANDING COMBINATIONS, WHEN HE WEIGHED 190 POUNDS

I'd like to know what age each was and the quality of the footage that was used for the comparison. Was he measuring "like for like"? It seems strange that two lightning fast peak athletes could be separated by as much as 25% on any metric. I remember someone (maybe angelo Dundee?) saying robinson was slick, rhythmic and everything about him was smooth, so maybe he could have been faster but at the expense of his balance and timing.

Tyson threw a 5/6 punch combination in literally 1/2 seconds. Please leave this thread.

Jim Jackobs talked about fast Ali was and showed how Robinson threw his Jab in 8 frames, while Ali threw his jab in six!

Have to agree with this. 25% is a massive difference.

You can always find a case when one fighter is throwing a lazy, slow jab, and time it as if that is representing that fighter's hand speed and is not an exception to how fast he usually is.

I recall the 2 1/1000's of a seconds taked about & illustrated in "When We Were Kings".
Thus it is likely this was measured after Ali's exile, which would be incredible, since he was faster before. Though he lost more foot speed & endurance.

Ali was so fast he could turn off the lights & be in bed before it got dark.

    Or so he said. ;-)
