Tomas Rojas vs. Irving Berry, 10 rounds @ featherweight

 

If he looks (or his name sounds) familiar - Tomas Rojas engaged in a brief yet memorable six minute war in his KO loss to Vic Darchinyan back in '09. He was game but outmatched again challenging Shinsuke Yamanaka in 2012.

Berry is a longtime "okay at everything, good at nothing" fringe contender.

 

Round 1

Rojas is flicking his long right jab out at Berry and circling just outside punching range, stalking and popping his right shoulder out in rolling motions from its socket. Berry lunges in with a straight combo on the body, falling in. Left jabs pumped into the air from too far away by Berry. Diving body shots by Berry, caught with a pair of rabbit punches backing away still bent over. Rojas claps Berry across the neck with a left hand lead and misses a right hook as Berry leans back into the ropes.

Round 2

Rojas is throwing long right jabs and tying up when Berry steamrolls in with uppercuts on the waistband. Rojas is swinging his right arm out front in pendulous motions. Berry turns southpaw himself. Jabs traded, both falling short. Berry ducks and bowls in some light body shots. Rojas misses a jab and slouches over to his left as Berry flurries and misses. Right hook and left hand by Rojas as Berry is slipping on a wet spot in the corner. Berry down. Ruled not a knockdown. Rojas is stepping in with lead right upper-hooks as Berry sits on the ropes waiting for him. Rojas is jerking his face back as Berry lunges out with his jab. Rojas pushes Berry into the ropes and both scrape with body shots.

Round 3

Rojas is side-arming his right jab out, banging Berry on the chest with a roundhouse left as Berry reverses into the ropes. Berry is orthodox, jabbing out with his left against Rojas' right. Rojas thrusts a left into Berry's kidneys as he turns his back dodging a jab. Rojas hurts Berry with a 1-2 and backs him into the ropes. Big body shots by Berry, staving Rojas off.

Round 4

Rojas is forcing exchanges coming in behind the long right jab. Berry throws overhand rights from the hip and connects but eats the lefts thrown like boulders from outside by Rojas. Berry is backed into the ropes and puffing up around the face. Body shots by Rojas. Left hooks and right hands by Berry, fighting desperately off the ropes. Rojas steps just close enough to score a long right hook and left on either side of the jaw, using his reach advantage.
