Much too old for the ring now.

You seem a trifle fixated on gay themes ending posts with" suck it" or "suck my nut sack". Personally I've nothing against gay people so I'm not perturbed by your choice of expressions.

I'm sorry posters attitudes towards you have been a triflle uncivil ,particularly as you are so scrupuously polite yourself.

On behalf of the posters that you have told to" **** off ",and," shut the **** up" may I take this opportunity to proffer a sincere thanks to you for the entertainment you have afforded us. It has been wholeheartedly appreciated

    [How's that for flowery verbiage?]

    Thank You Crank.

    ps" lightning fast":lol::toney

well i tried to end on a high note but when dealing with trash..... I have nothing against gays either.but figured an ******* like you would.yeah you didn't start cussing just rudely telling strangers what to do(like i said, the reason why i started cussing) again, you take this site(and yourself) way too seriously.my silly "lightning fast" line was my way of mirroring your childish "jeanette" or "usa".i thought you and your cronies would have realized that i was mocking your adolescent, nerdy, secret language(now that's mature). THANKS MCGAY.

I am not sure why my original post didnt have a link in it. I presume though, this is the Jack Johnson - Sam Langford second fight which i was talking about. It seemed to go the full 4 rounds and is very interesting description.

Given that it is an exhibition only, and it is described by Sam Langford in such detail, i would have thought it almost certain that it actually took place. Is this the consensus from those like Clay or others who are more in the know than me?

If so, does anyone know the date of this benefit. It sounds like it is pretty close (timeline wise) to the Johnson Langford prime for prime fight that should have happened.

It took place alright, three days after their real fight, it was scheduled for 3 rounds.

Langford makes it sound as though they were going hammer and tongs all over the place but a contemporary report of it states that Johnson was careful to avoid Langford's injured eye. That certainly doesnt tally with Langford's lurid decription of a life and death struggle.

Johnson won the first fight when Sam was 20 years old and just 156 pounds. Big deal. Sam wasn't very experienced with larger heavies in 1906.

Johnson steered clear of Langford once he matured into a 175-190 pound body.

    Its been said before but:

Sam Langford weighed 156 for their fight and in his prime matured to about 185, anything over and he was called fat by the press. He was around 23 years old.

Jack Johnson weighed 185 pounds at this time and would mature to weigh about 205 pounds in his championship prime. He was five years older than Langford.

Both fighters matured and improved at HW significantly in the years AFTER their fight. So the idea that Langford somehow closed that weight, experience, size, and stylistic gap is ludicrous. Nevermind that styles make fights and given his advantages in height, weight, and strength Johnson was a bad match for Langford at any time whether they fought 1906, 1913, or 1921.

The difference between 156 and 185 is far greater than 185 vs 205 in a boxing sense.

In addition Sam was just 20. Johnson was 27-28 when he fought Langford. Come on Klompton, you are better than this.

On film Langford is very strong and active on the inside. Assuming Johnson would man handle or be able to take Langford's punches are two unknowns. Based on who Langford knocked out, Johnson's in trouble when he lands.

Langford has the edge in power, reach, durability, activity in terms of punches thrown and in my opinion never dogged it as Johnson on occasion did.

The difference between 156 and 185 is 29 pounds. The difference between 185 and 205 is 20 pounds. I would argue that Langford blowing up to a basketball with arms is not necessarily a plus compared to Johnson gaining 20 pounds of solid muscle and looking like he was carved from stone. In shape Langford was at his best at about 170 max. At 185 which is what he typically weighed in his hw prime he was called "soft" looking at 199 he was hog fat, so lets not pretend his weight gain was due to him adding some herculean muscle. It wasnt. The guy let himself go and was well known for it.

Now, whether Langford was 20 or 23 (both dates are disputed and both have their supporters) what is known is that Langford had plenty of experience and wasnt just coming out of the amateur ranks. In fact, based on their current records (which may or may not be incomplete) Langford had more fights (60) than Johnson (51) at this point in their careers.

Lets not pretend age is a major determining factor in fights. Its experience and mileage and Langford had that in his favor.

I fail to see how "based on who Langford knocked out, Johnson's in trouble when he lands." Please elaborate. Based on what? One could easily flip that argument and say based on who Johnson fought (including Langford) that he controls him easily and wins a comfortable decision (which is exactly how I think it would play out).

Furthermore, whatever strength Langford exhibits in films against Flynn, Jeanette, and Lang (none of which are even close to Johnson in terms of physical strength) is hardly indicative of the success he would have with Johnson who had a minimum of ten pounds on those guys and three inches on two of them.

Langford had the edge in reach? They had the same reach and Johnson stood 6 or 7 inches taller.

Langford has the edge in durability? How do you figure this? Until the point Johnson lost the title both fighters had only been stopped twice but Langford had been knocked down numerous times, more than Johnson (not the least of which was a knockdown to Johnson so we know Johnson can hurt Langford).

As for how active Langford was against other fighters thats irrelevant because Johnson was a master of making fighters slow down and fight his pace just like Bernard Hopkins. What Langford does against Lang or Flynn or Jeanette is going to be night and day compared to what he CAN do against Johnson.

The idea that Langford never dogged it is ludicrous. Obviously you havent read the numerous reports of Langford just showing up to collect a paycheck in a glorified sparring session. Dozens of them by the way.

Langford was the more experienced figter with over 50 fights. Johnson added 23lbs of muscle after that fight Langford added about 20lbs after that it was fat. Langford got bigger and stronger and undoubteldy so did Johnson, plus Johnson had the benefit of added experience, and the confidence of being a world champion.

Excellent points! Langford was floored over 22 times, twice for 9 counts against Johnson.Pollack puts Langford's age at 23 for
the Johnson fight, Moyle at 20, either way he was the more experienced man.
