Hi I'm an amateur from England. I have recently been trying out this gym where professionals, amateurs and a few white collar boxers train.

In one session, we were doing circuits, and the coach who was a former professional would come round with a medicine ball and drop it on our stomachs 10 times. That was fine. But then he would try different object such as a bowling pin, a baseball bat and even a metal pipe. And he would hit us in the stomach with it, not very hard, but hard enough to hurt. It stung a lot!

This was supposedly to increase core strength and durability to body shots. I can understand the medicine ball, but I don't know about the reliability of those other objects? It wasnt just pain you'd expect from a normal workout, but complete agony. I have a bruised stomach 2 days after. Would like to hear opinions from people experienced in boxing about this. Cheers.

Shouldn't be doing that, medicine ball is ok but still not advisable

This is an example of ridiculous old school training methods that people still use

It's the exact same as him smacking you in the face with the medicine ball, it's supposed to toughen you up, why not toughen up your face too

I've seen the medicine ball, but not bowling pins, etc...so I'm not sure it is 'old school' or some crazy guy thinking he is doing something. I don't think the idea is that the medicine ball makes your muscles stronger as much as it is too get you used to preparing to get hit.
And you do toughen up your face, every time you get hit in it. Even Ray Leonard commented on that fact. Take some time off, then get back in the ring and you'll find you puff up easier than you did before.

    Just lol.

That isn't boxing training, that's "I'm tougher than you and I'll prove it by being a ****ing idot!" type stupidity.

The only point to it is to practice breathing out at the right moment, you don't need to hit yourself with anything to do that though.

Seems silly. The medicine ball will help. Ever go a while without sparring? Those body shots hurt when you have been out of the gym. But one pro told me it could cause damage.

Is the coach even being that tough? doesn't sound too tough to be hitting students with pipes and going "Suck it up". How bout I hit you over the head with a brick and you suck it up coach.

I find the medicine ball to be a bit over rated. I prefer a nice sturdy chair. And usually follow every session with being hit in the face with a brick. Really build up my tolerance.
