I voted for Porter, because he seems like he wants it more.

 

Porter is better than Brook, is a terrible stylistic match up for Brook, has fought much better opposition than Brook and has home advantage. Porter will stop by about the 8th to 10th.

Kell Brook is a hard puncher— he is balanced and gets good leverage on his shots, and he is not a guy who fires wild punches. His right hand, thrown as a lead or behind the jab, is probably his best punch but he can turn over the left hook as well and get good power on it.

The rest of his game, though, has some holes. He is not a very good defensive fighter. He doesn’t move his head much, nor does he tuck his chin. He is there to be hit. Carson Jones had a lot of success applying pressure to Brook in their first fight, and Shawn Porter can bring a whole other level of hurt to the party than Carson Jones. And while Brook is undoubtedly a solid puncher, he doesn’t seem to me to have the kind of power that will translate against the cream of the division as one-punch KO power. He faded badly down the stretch in the first Jones fight, and while he probably learned something from that experience, he’s going to be dealing with a very strong and athletic opponent who is the best pressure fighter in the division.

Porter’s combination of size and speed make him a pretty special fighter at 147, and he’s a better tactical fighter than he’s given credit for. He didn’t just bum rush Devon Alexander— he did an exceptional job scouting Alexander’s weaknesses and just always seemed to have the initiative in that fight. He showed a diverse arsenal against Alexander, and was often able to score from the outside, then press even more and bust Alexander up on the inside when Alexander would try to backpedal or clinch. He’s a fearless inside fighter and very good at making his opponent uncomfortable in clinches.

It’s hard for me to imagine Brook actually outfighting Porter; Brook will need to land some big power shots and hurt Porter if he is going to win this. I see Porter either winning a comfortable UD or possibly getting a late stoppage.

 

I’ve not yet completely sold on Shawn Porter. Don’t get me wrong, he looks a terrific fighter, physically imposing, but I think Brook will be his sternest test to date, more so than Devon Alexander. Also, too much has been made of his demolition job on Paulie Malignaggi. Paulie was taken apart by Khan 2 years ago and back then people were saying that he had aged over-night. Fast forward 2 years and some are saying that Porter’s stoppage of Malignaggi makes him great; go figure.

If Shawn bulldozes in on Kell as he did Paulie I can see him coming unstuck. Brook might not be on the same level as the likes of GGG and Matthyse in terms of devastaing one punch knockout power but certainly hits hard enough to take you out if he catches you cleanly, and usually his timing is fantastic. That said, being on US soil is a considerable advantage for Porter and his resume is the more accomplished of the two, so quite rightly he is the favourite. Kell has always insisted that the better the opponent in front him the better he will perform – Now is his time to show the world that. If he can pull off the victory then, which I believe he is very much capable of if he can move up another level or two, then it will be a fantastic accomplishment and will show that he really is special K.

 

Brook decision

 

Someone who can use a good jab and fight at range will cause Porter problems but Brook still walks in and out in straight lines with his chin up the air, which is perfect for Porter. Plus, will Brooks jab even be as effective at this level? There are still question marks over Brook and this is a huge step up for him, so if (as Brook may be expecting) he can't dictate the fight with his jab, this will pretty much break Brooks heart and make it even easier for Porter.

 

Kell always gets nervous. nothing to worry about here.

had he not been before but appeared so in this fight, then that would be out of the ordinary, so it would be food for thought. but that isn't the case. he's doing good.

and yes, Brook on points. although if it does go to the cards with it looking like a Brook win, they'll do the old Americano and rip him off. there's pretty much no chance of getting the decision over there. but we'll be watching like we always do to see the truth.

 

the Khan/Malignaggi fight was even further back than that, it was 4 years ago.
