Really? Because he is certainly is superior in Brook's own areas of specialty. (straight accurate counter-punching in particular) I'm not a Brook hater, by the way. I actually saw him beating Porter very wide. No shame not sizing up with guys like JMM and PBF, you know...
Floyd certainly isn't superior in punching power. They are both superior fighters overall but in some areas I wouldn't say vastly.
Here we go overrating another fighter after a decent win. Brook has a very sharp pinpoint jab but it's hardly the best around. No doubt its his best asset which helps set him up for his right hand combo but it's hardly wlad calibre where he can bully his opponent the whole fight with it.
I don't think it really is overrating him to cite his jab specifically as the best at welter, if that so happens to be true...and looking around the landscape at 147lbs...well... There just aren't too many top welterweights heavily reliant in their styles upon a strong jab. :conf Nobody is suggesting his jab is the best in the sport pound for pound or anything, I don't think (at least, I hope) - but in his division, almost by walk-over and just dearth of any major argument for any other claimants, it probably is.
Solid sharp jab.. gets a lot of pop on it and times it well, but wouldn't say his jab is the most powerful in the sport. Definitely one of the better ones around though. Remember when he dropped Hector Saldivia with it, right on the button as well.
The thing is no one rated brook before the fight, people were saying he was only fighting people in the uk, and being protected having too many tune-up fights. I think there was this idea that he was just some pretty boy who wouldn't be able to handle the rough and tumble But in every fight he fought even when coming across difficulties like a against carson jones, he always showed he had world class ability and the ring IQ to adapt dig deep and grind out a win. Now the same boxing people who dimissed him are jumping on the dick riding wagon in blowing him up to be something he's not. As if he could beat mayweather or manny. Brook is a good fighter in his own right but doubt he will go on to become a great or reach the heights of those two fighters.
I'm more impressed with the size of his gonads than anything to be honest. I really thought he wasn't going to be able to pull it off. He would've been under incredible pressure boxing over in the US on a stage of that magnitude (being part of the main event) for the first time and he so easily could've froze or succumbed to it and ended up blowing his load early after burning up too much nervous during the lead up to the fight, especially under Porter's relentless aggression and having experienced problems in the past with his conditioning. He looked really nervous in the final few interviews I saw too. I hadn't seen much of Porter beforehand, only two fights in total, but I'd heard a lot of big talk about him being an absolute beast. Malignaggi said he was unbelievably strong, that his power was ''out of this world'' and that he'd never been hit that hard. I'd also heard that he was beating up LHWs in the gym, tearing right through them, and that he knocked down James Kirkland a couple of times in sparring too and had done the same to Danny Jacobs in the amateurs etc. but Brook managed to hold it all together and he showed real inner strength and fortitude.
I picked Brook over Porter, and don't think it was some amazing win...nor is he now a h2h juggernaut for having done it. Brook is very solid but not overly special (despite his ring moniker) - Porter was just rubbish.
I don't put JMM anywhere near the level of Floyd personally. Yeh I saw your scorecard in the RBR - spot on
Well obviously, he did get shut out. :yep (yes, before people start crawling out the woodwork laying in, yes, I realize he packed on too much bulk and came up in weight the improper way and was done in by the size as much as the skill of Mayweather...but still, big JMM fan though I am, fact of the matter is that he is less skilled...) :good I was in shock that people had Porter winning, or had any problems with any of the official scores. :?
Aw. Blub a bit more about it. The fight looked like it did because Porter is wild, rushes in head first. Brook fought the perfect fight for that opponent. Watch him next time and he'll be back to his usual appealing style.
