Which means that Vitali was also a better finisher!

By the way, what would Marciano's KO% be if he stuck around till 39 like Tyson did? And what would Tyson's be if he quit after the Savarese KO at 32… like Marciano?

Boy, stats are fun, aren't they?!

AGE. None of Marciano's best challengers had particularly good chins either

I don't think that is necessarily true. Tony Tucker, Truth Williams and Buster Douglas were not exactly iron chined.

Tony Tucker was durable enough. He wasn't stopped until well into old age.. Williams wasn't one of Tyson's best opponents and Douglas wasn't one of his victims.

On paper, I think Williams was one of prime TYsons better chalengers. going into their fight Williams had more recently beat rated fighters than some other chalengers. He beat more rated fighters than Biggs, Bruno, Holmes and Tubbs did in their most recent fights.

Douglas was not a Tyson victim but on paper he had fought more curent contenders and 50-50 fights than I think any other chalengers to Tyson in his recent fights. Maybe that's how he did so well?

Tucker had beat Douglas but apart from that he had not been tested that many times at top level. I think James broad was the only other half capable opponent he'd fought before then. For a relatively protected contender fighting prime Douglas and prime Tyson back to back Tony did prove to be durable however. Later less so. You could argue he was durable for two fights at elite level.

Tucker had an excellent chin ,apart from being stopped with swollen eyes, he was not stopped until he was 39 years old!

Thomas had a very good chin, surviving Coetzee's bombs,Weaver's power and Witherspoon's right hand .

Tyson was the first man to stop him. Tyson was also the first man to stop Tubbs.
The second and last man to stop Berbick. The only man to stop Holmes.

Walcott had been stopped 4 times when he fought Marciano.
    ****ell 6 times, Moore 4 times,Charles twice.

Yes I was impressed when Tyson stopped those guys for the first time but since then I can't help thinking how under prepared they all were compared to Tyson who was active and used to fighting at top level. Tubbs even put weight on to avoid a bonus to be in shape. He infuriated his trainer who walked out on him days before the fight. It was two years since Tubbs (who did not have that much of an elite level record) beat a top fighter. Who had he ever beat?

Thomas had Been a beter fighter. At least he had once been regarded as perhaps the best HW in the world but that was not true for quite some time. He had eye and shoulder problems, not to mention recreational abuses since. He had not shown he was better than the losing form he showed relinquishing the belt he lost to the guy Tyson already blew out in two rounds... I think not eating a rated guy since then would make Thomas as under prepared as Tubbs was.

Holmes? He had been fishing and drinking for two years. No tune up fights. No rating. Nothing. It was a long time since he proved he could convincingly beat a heavyweight.. perhaps as long ago as the David Bey fight years earlier. There really was no shred of evidence Holmes was prepared to beat a rated heavyweight at that time.

A match well made is a match half won. These guys never stood a chance. Under prepared and hand picked.

Apart from Tubbs all were top ten rated by the Ring.
Thomas had been the WBC champ.
    Berbick the reigning WBC champ.
    Tucker the reigning IBF champ.
    Bruno the WBC champ.
    Spinks the reigning IBF champ.
Holmes the WBC and IBF champ.

Tyson' resume is a very good one he was beating young ranked contenders and reigning champs .

    Not prepared?
Tucker was a pound less than his last fight when he had won the vacant IBF title against Douglas.
Tubbs was 6lbs less than when he had lost a split dec to Witherspoon .

Thomas was 5lbs less than when he had fought Berbick for the WBC title.
Willams was only 3lbs more than what he had against Holmes 4 years earlier!
Berbick scaled the same as he had in beating Thomas for the WBC title 8 months earlier.
    Your hypothesis is nonsense
Marciano beat a fat lhvy who had been stopped 4 times by middleweights and once by a lhvy.
A 40 years old Lhvy who said his legs were gone going into that fight.
A 37 and 38 years old man ,and a ringworn 33 and 34 years old one.
Lastarza did not warrant a title shot off his record.

the end of the game counts the most, its not how you start but how you finish and the wisdom to know when to finish. Marciano cleaned out his division and got out on top. Mike after Douglas and losing Cus and the rest of his old foundation went with King and F----ed his life and his career. I think the 1st Holyfield fight hurt him because he couldn't hurt EH and EH hurt him. We can guess how it may have been but how it became is now history....It is what it is.

Never thought much of Tubbs and his work ethic, Thomas was back on the smack,Berbick KO'd in1 by Mercado a so so fighter lucky to be in an era of underachievers and unconditioned, Tucker was conditioned but decided to survive and Tyson agreed. Tyson looked good vs Thomas and Berbick and treated Tubbs the way he deserved but these were not skilled guys

LaStarza was 53-3 and beat every man that beat him except for Marciano (which was a close fight) Moore was on his best win streak 50 fights with one DQ and one controversial loss that he avenged with a KO, Walcott was on a high and in the best shape of his life, he was fit, skilled and could hit with either hand, Charles was a year older than Marciano and had just KO'd Coley Wallace and Bob Satterfield in an electrifying manor. Call them old men but they beat the bigger, younger men to become # 1 contenders and the skill/experience level was supreme

No, that is merely good career planning.

Tyson went to jail and spent his fortune (his personal not athletic failing) thus he kept going on far too long. Are we going to the fault Peter Jackson, Jim Jeffries, Joe Louis and Ali for fighting out of fiscal need?

Marciano, as much as I love him, had a short, carefully constructed career at the top level of the division.

he fought 5 # 1 contenders and avoided no one and rematched tough fights, he started late was 32 and with no money fights he decided to end his spartan boxing life and have some fun while he was on top of his game.

I wish he would have topped it off with a KO over Nino Valdes to make it 50-0 with 43 KO's but Valdes would not comply and kept losing the qualifier

Tyson was a murderous puncher and Marciano was as well, I think Marciano carried the power later he has some late round KO's to his credit.

On another note I think the difference showed in the face of adversity and IMO that's where Tyson cracked and Marciano excelled. For power both men had it.

Nah, the drugs did a toll on Pinklon (and I know from his cousin he was on them prior to the Berbick fight) Tubbs took the count from the 1st hard punch he felt form Tyson, Marciano would not have been far off. Berbick was too much of a target, Big Head and awkward mobility I dont see him fairing well against aggressive punchers style wise he was more like a Norton who could back up the boxer type. Crude Mercado took him out in 1 and Tyson made him flap around the ring like a wet seal, I dont see him doing well with Marciano

It would be difficult for Rocky to get past Pinkie's jab. Even though he could, and probably would get past the jab, Pinkie's chin would see him though till the end. Very tough match for Marciano to get through. Berbick was tough and durable, the Mercado KO was early in his career. Do we even know how it went down? Tubbs was talented for a fat guy. Rocco aint going through them like Tyson did.
