Rubio was the best option available,GGG is not ducking

let's go to boxrec for the middleweight rankings:

1 – Gennady Golovkin -
2 – Miguel Cotto – has been called out by Golovkin and so far has never mentioned wanting this fight. Plus, he is probably waiting for a more lucrative and easier Canelo payday. Plus is not a real middleweight and the fight would not be even remotely competitive.
3 – Sam Soliman – a 40-year old unexciting small middleweight from Australia who is only in the public eye because of his recent upset win over a nearly-shot Felix Sturm and otherwise has no significant wins to speak of. Arguably an even worse fight than Rubio.
4 – Peter Quillin – fighting on rival Showtime, plus he’s pretty untested, only has one good win (N’Jikam) and has a habit of looking lousy even in his mismatch wins. Also has a bout scheduled. Not a realistic option.
5 – Sergio Gabriel Martinez - not fighting anytime soon since his knees appear to be done.
6 – Felix Sturm – washed up, old, unable to pull the trigger anymore… the fight would not be competitive
7 – Martin Murray – already turned down two shots at GGG, one of which was a career high payday. Also cannot get into the US because of visa issues. Not happening
8 – Matt Korobov – busy fighting Peter Quillin for the WBO title, plus is totally untested.
9 – Daniel Geale – already got annihiliated by GGG.
10 – Daniel Jacobs – fighting on rival Showtime.
11 – David Lemieux – interesting option, but in truth has no really good wins and when really tested, he failed. Proved he can be both outboxed and blasted out with power. He would provide an explosive fight and a chin-test though.
12 – Marco Antonio Rubio - like Lemieux, is an action fighter with a big punch and a “Mouth for War”, but also like Lemieux, has shown that he can be decidedly beaten a number of ways.
13 – Billy Joe Saunders – British undefeated and somewhat untested prospect. Kinda young and would be a massive underdog. Plus, totally unknown to American audiences. This would probably not be as relevant a fight as Rubio.
14 – Matthew Macklin - already got annihiliated by GGG.
15 – Dmitry Chudinov – see Billy Joe Saunders above, substitute “Russian” for “British”
Next up, possible Super Middleweight contenders: (please note that this would mean GGG might have to give up his belt)
1 – Andre Ward – has specifically mentioned in public that he refuses to be mentioned in the same sentence as GGG and wants people to instantly stop asking for that fight. He even stated to *********** that he personally called Tom Loeffler and asked him to stop mentioning his name in relation to GGG. Excellent fight, but cannot be made right now, especially with Ward on the sidelines because of promotional issues.
2 – Carl Froch – is waiting for an answer from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While there is still a chance of that bout happening, he will not fight GGG. Excellent fight, but dependent on JCC Jr’s decision, which is pending.
3 – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr – already pulled out of fighting GGG, although to be fair both Top Rank and JCC Jr. stated it was because they refused to promote the bout without him signing an extension with them, which he was unwilling to do.
4 – Arthur Abraham – old, diminished ability, exposed… unlikely to want to risk his current streak of easy and profitable defenses. Plus would be unavailable this fall because he is fighting Paul Smith at the end of September. I guess the fight would be kind of interesting though… down the road…
5 – Robert Stieglitz – this would be an interesting fight although Stieglitz would still be the underdog. I am not sure how much this fight would move the needle for American audiences, so I am not sure whether it would be worth giving up the WBA title for GGG.
6 – Edwin Rodriguez – unable to make 168 pounds anymore. Otherwise, this would be pretty interesting…
7 – James DeGale – meh, I guess this would be interesting but my guess is DeGale would not take it as long as he still has a shot at a big profile British showdown with Carl Froch.
8 – Thomas Oosthuizen – cannot make 168 pounds anymore and honestly I don’t think he is boxing anymore.
9 – Anthony Dirrell – yes, this would be interesting, but Dirrell would not be available for October as he just fought.
10 – George Groves – this would also be very interesting, but Groves and his new promoter Sauerland might not want to take the risk as long as they are chasing a title opportunity against Anthony Dirrell
Next up, Jr. Middleweights moving up:
1 – Saul Alvarez – fighting on (and possibly contracted to) a rival network, at least so far, probably waiting for the easier and more lucrative Cotto bout, would be unavailable in September
2 – Erislandy Lara – Al Haymon (I think), rival network etc…
3 – Carlos Molina – unable to enter the US, probably kind of small, VERY unexciting, Al Haymon (I think)
4 – Demetrius Andrade – yes! this would work.
5 – Ishe Smith – oh God, please, no!
6 – Jermell Charlo – rival network, untested, probably Al Haymon
7 – Cornelius Bundrage – oh God, please, no!
8 – Austin Trout – meh …
9 – Vanes Martirosyan – oh God, please, no!
10 – James Kirkland – this would also be interesting, my feeling is right now promoters ar staying away from him since he doesn’t have everything straightened out… on any level. I’m not sure he is even training. Unlikely to be available for October.
So, in conclusion, personally I happen to think that at middleweight, Rubio was arguably the best option available.
At super middleweight I don’t think there are any big names actually available, at least not for this autumn. There are a few better options than Rubio (Stieglitz, Rodriguez) but I am not sure they would be that much more enticing that GGG would give up his title for them.
At junior middleweight I see at least 2 better options than Rubio: Andrade, James Kirkland, but both of these would probably ask for big financial commitments from HBO, as would a bout with George Groves.
Soooo… I dunno, I honestly don’t see any obvious big fight that GGG is dodging, at least not for this fall. I think realistically it’s this kind of fight or no fight at all.

 

Who else will fight him? Is a fight with the Felix Sturm that just lost to Sam Soliman that much better? (not to mention the lengths that Sturm went to before to not fight him)

Cotto won’t fight him because he doesn’t want to mess up a Canelo fight (and because he values his life), Peter Quillin and Danny Jacobs are Al Haymon fighters, Sergio is probably done, Korobov is fighting Quillin, he just beat Geale, Soliman is fighting JERMAIN TAYLOR instead, and I believe Martin Murray already had an opponent (and if they want to turn GGG into an attraction in the states, Murray can’t go there)

 

Nice list, however you missed out the boxers that Golovkin is clearly ducking

1. Andre Dirrell – Mega talented American Olympic hero. Incredibly elusive to opponents and also to promoters, managers and matchmakers.
2. Sergio Mora – Mexican-American brawler. Guaranteed excitement in the ring. Sylvester Stallone’s favourite boxer.
3. Anthony Mundine – highly experienced, universally popular and respected worldwide. Often touted as having the skills the beat Floyd Mayweather. Once beat Bronko McKart.
